Tips For Furnishing your Home On The Cheap
Self Storage — By Shopping Blogs on January 17, 2009 1:52 pmIt is possible to completely furnish your home for a fraction of the cost of buying new furniture. If you are a college student or are just starting out on your own, here are some suggestions to get you going. Bear in mind that your home may be rather ‘eclectic’ in terms of decor, but some people really like the mish-mashed design elements that come with experiential shopping.
- Garage sales and thrift stores are some of the best places to find offbeat items like old school 1970′s lamps and retro chairs, interesting pieces of art or sculpture and cheap furniture that you can ‘redo’ into a masterpiece if you wish, and you won’t usually spend more than fifteen or twenty bucks for it.
- If you have ever been a self storage customer , you’ve probably heard that if you don’t pay your monthly rent, then the facility has a right to sell all of your things. While this sounds harsh, they give the defaulted tenant ample time to begin a payment plan. They don’t just sell your stuff. That being said, there are self storage customer people who, for one reason or another, eventually decide that the stuff they have stored is no longer worth paying to keep, and they let it go. Find out from your local furniture storage center if the auctions are public. If so, some truly amazing finds can be had coming from those forgotten tombs.
- Just because something is on the side of the road doesn’t make it trash. I’ve pulled some of my most interesting pieces from the curb, including a hand carved antique (though the table top was slightly damaged) and a circa 1950′s tin farmhouse kitchen cabinet that now holds my recyclables. Perhaps the social stigma attached with trash picking is the hardest thing to overcome. I’ve even gone to someones front door to ask if I could take something that was sitting on their curb. They have never told me no or called me names. If they don’t want it, and you do, then take it.
As a side note to trash ‘collecting’, I would recommend that you thoroughly check any dumpstered items for signs of insect infestation. If you see any signs at all of insects, especially cockroaches, then leave it be, as well as everything else that is nearby. Don’t ask me how I know this…I just know. Trust me on this one.
When you keep your eyes open for cheap or even free stuff, it’s amazing the amount of cool stuff you’ll happen to come across. It just goes to show that even in today’s topsy turvy economy, we can get what we need and get it for less than we ever thought possible.
