Often certain objects are produced for other purposes but they gain so much popularity with the public that they eventually become a collectible. For instance, the Star Wars action figures initially produced as simple toys have turned into collectibles with their high prices. Collectibles are also often launched as a part of the marketing technique.

Collectibles of some famous sports star or team or even a popular book are also available in the market such as Harry Potter or the famous sitcom Friends’ collectibles. Various publications bring out special editions of books or journals that are termed ‘Collector’s edition’ because of their rarity.

While people buy collectibles as a hobby or a whim, collecting antiques is both a hobby and even a business. Many collectors, who start acquiring antiques for the simple joy of doing it, turn it into a part- time or even full- time business.
