The Difference Between Psycho Therapy and Counseling

Psycho theraphy is colloquially known as talk therapy. Mostly, this talk therapy is administered by qualified health professionals specialized in mental health to people who have specific problems. It is commonly observed that terms psycho theraphy and counseling are used interchangeably, but the truth is that there is a notable difference between the both.
Counseling
This is a popular and more understood word due to the many counseling programs and centers that have opened up to help people deal with many issues connected with personal as well as professional life. Counseling is done predominantly to solve problems and need not necessarily deal with a medical mental illness. The counselor or professional helps the person concerned by being a good listener and understanding the latters problems, and tries to analyze the root cause leading to the disturbance. Upon analysis he realizes the various aspects of the problems and tries to advise and present options and offers opinions which the patient might have been unaware of. Psycho theraphy or talk therapy is a more technical medical term. This is a branch of psychiatric medicine that deals with the emotional and mental well being of a human being. The medical professional tries to bring relief to his psycho theraphy patients through verbal and non verbal communication. The use of chemicals or resorting to physical measures for cure is avoided. The treatment is purely and completely psychological and is facilitated by the establishment of a professional relationship with patient and is attained by complete doing away with emotional problems, symptoms and through a development of positive personality. There is more concentration on the problem itself rather than the root cause.Previously, psycho theraphy sessions led to a dependent relationship between professional and patient that could go on for years. Present practice sees brief psycho theraphy sessions leading to a quicker cure. Moreover, psycho theraphy is being used in conjunction with medicines in treatment of mentally ill patients. psycho theraphy utilizes many approach methods for patients with common complaints like generalized anxiety disorders technically known as cognitive behavioral therapy CBT such as analysis and psychodynamic therapy which resolves deep psychological issues.
The approaches in psycho theraphy are not restricted to any one school but there are numerous approaches that can be taken for the one and ultimate goal of resolution of all problems and mental disturbances faced by patient. Different therapists are trained differently and their practice of method differs. Hence the effectiveness or failure of a particular method cannot be quantified and similar is the case with psychotherapy taken as a whole.
Thus a psycho theraphy session involves two people sitting together in a room, where one wants to change something in his life and the other is professionally trained to help him achieve his goal through interactions and deliberations. The professional help aids in turning patients thoughts into a more positive and productive direction or at least helps him to reduce and modify his negative perceptions with realities that he would be able to face.
