Two Guys And A Self Storage Podcast

A close work friend of mine and I have been talking about setting up our own self storage podcast . We think that we would make for a great team, as we are both knowledgeable about the industry. Further, though, we are both pretty funny guys. We do not think that we would have any trouble with holding the attention of even the most antagonistic audience.

Of course, it would be great to have a funny and informative self storage podcast on the air. The humor, I dare say, would make our points ring truer. I have found that making someone laugh is the quickest way to build rapport. If you want to build rapport with an anonymous audience member, you had better make them laugh more than just one time.

That, I believe, is why my friend and I would be incredibly good at this sort of thing. We have made our own coworkers laugh quite a bit, and using our knowledge of self storage units, no less. I believe that we have a genuine talent for this kind of work, and I would be very interested to see where we can take it. Perhaps I will have to look into this a bit more seriously in the coming weeks. “I’m great, Jason, thanks. You spoke with me earlier and said that there had been some recent changes in the industry that were big news. I haven’t heard anything about that. Would you share it with us?” she asked, completely clueless as to what Jason was referring to.

“Yes, Jackie. I’d love to share it with the audience. You see, I’ve been in this industry for over ten years, and this is by far the biggest thing that has happened, as far as I’m concerned. I’m in love with the most beautiful and amazing self storage sales force leader in the country, Jackie, and it’s you. Over the last year, I have come to realize that I want to be with you always. Jackie, will you marry me?”

Jackie sat in stunned silence, replaying what she had just heard in her mind, uncertain that it was really asked….

“Jackie?” said Jason, slightly concerned.

Tears streamed down her face. Jason came into the room where she was standing. He had his cell phone in one hand, and a big gleaming diamond ring in the other. He held the ring out to put it on her finger.

Jackie dropped the phone and said “Of course I’ll marry you.”

It may be fun to get some of our seasoned veterans together to make a self storage podcast . Think about it:

Podcasts are only getting more popular as time goes on. It truly seems like you can find a podcast on any subject, regardless of how obscure and/or esoteric it may be. I was browsing podcasts on the internet the other day and I found an entire show about one of my favorite video games. Granted, it was an amazing game, great storyline; great graphics for the time but still! What a narrow subject!

With the self storage industry booming, I am surprised that it was somewhat difficult for me to find a self storage podcast as I browsed through my options. Such a podcast would not only benefit companies, but also everyday customers.

Everyday customers could listen to these podcasts to figure out which qualities they value most in a storage facility. I have written extensively about the importance of good security features–likewise, the “average Joe’s” inclination to ignore said importance. A podcast would allow for me to reach a much broader audience. (And it would, I dare say, let my fingers do a bit of much needed healing.) Reaching a wider audience would mean that more people were making sound decisions with respect to storage.

With the combined efforts of all of our representatives, we could certainly come up with an entertaining and informative podcast. Now, the only question is, why haven’t we started? Perhaps I will begin tonight…

If I were to set about creating a self storage podcast that would engage industry insiders (namely sales representatives), I think that I would certainly talk about the importance of building rapport with each and every client.

Of course, it is always important to build rapport in person. You do not, after all, want to scare a potential customer out of your store. In person, though, you have several advantages. Someone is much less likely to treat you rudely when they have to look at you face to face. Further, someone is much more likely to trust you if they can see you in person.

Over the phone, people are much more volatile and much less willing to trust you. This presents the telephone sales representative with some unique obstacles. We have to assure callers that the facility they are calling will, in fact, keep their belongings safe after hours. Likewise, we have to assure callers that the facility they are interested in will be kept clean. Of course, we can always push for callers to go see the site in person we can schedule a site tour, but the real trick to securing reservations over the phone is building trust (or rapport). Building rapport with callers enables us to overcome the uncertainly (perhaps distrust) inherent in all telephone conversations.

To make the self storage podcast a bit more interesting, we could consider having a round-table discussion with site managers (“in person” sales people) and call center representatives. It would be fun to see how we approach the same situation with radically different styles and strategies.

I wrote a previous blog entry about how much fun it could be to run a self storage podcast . But more precisely what would we cover in such a podcast? Really, I can think of several issues that I would cover if said podcast were geared towards my own workforce.

For one, I would devote an entire episode to the importance of fully understanding car storage. Though it may seem simple (what could be complicated about a parking space?), it is always important to make sure that you understand what your caller is asking for; what your caller’s priorities are; what (specific) type of space they are looking for.

As any seasoned representative knows, different people are looking for entirely different qualities in their parking spaces. While some people are absolutely fine with parking their car in a standard outdoor parking space, others are looking for something enclosed, something much more like a private garage. Many classic car owners have to put a lot of work into restoring their vehicle care, vehemently, about making sure that other people do not have access to all of their hard work. If you can offer this sort of person the parking space they are actually looking for (i.e. something that meets their top priorities), you have already begun the process of building rapport (overcoming inherent objections).

A self storage podcast about vehicle storage could really benefit a lot of our representatives. This is not to say, of course, that our representatives are uncomfortable with vehicle storage. A specialty episode, though, could introduce some basic information; further, some additional strategies for securing parking reservations.

I dislike when someone knows more about a particular topic than I do. I’m not saying that I have to be the best at everything. I am just saying that I don’t like looking like the fool. Have you ever been in a group of people that are talking about a topic that you know nothing about and then someone asks you for your opinion? I’m sure we have all been in that situation.

Luckily for us there are various ways we can read up on a topic. Like the storing industry and feel more inclined to comment. Hopefully we are able to recover some face that has been left on the ground from trying to discuss something in which I was once ignorant about before. You can search on the internet for all kinds of self storage podcasts in which you can learn more about the different facets of the industry.

The self storing industry is a different kind of beast than more retail environments. Not everyone is going to even believe that some places receive a large number of phone calls looking for storage. Also, when it comes to needing some information, finding some sort of informational link could save people some money.

Most of the time you might have to find a different place to view or listen to a self storage podcasts because there aren’t to many out there. So if you can find a resource that can produce some different self storage podcasts for you to view, then you can know what you are talking about when it comes to self storage.
