The Holiday Season Draws Near
Of course, the holiday season leads us to reflect upon our lives. As the holidays draw near, our friends, our family, and our coworkers predominate our thoughts. Seeing as I work in the self storage community , I was led to consider my own coworkers. I wondered how they might be spending their vacations, and unsurprisingly, I found that I could conjure up a few thoughts.
It certainly is not accurate to say that the self storage community is a predictable entity. Sure, we all share an interest in self storage and customer service, but we have our own private lives to lead and our own unique interests. It should not surprise you, then, that my coworkers took to a wide variety of holiday activities.
I know that I am not the only person who spent the holidays steeping in new video games. It is a tradition of my sister and I to trade games on Christmas Eve. The goal, here, is for me to beat the game that my sister gives me before she can beat the game that I give her. I usually win this competition, as I am a bit more prone to long stretches of gaming. We have our fun, though.
I know that several of my coworkers took on active roles in their local churches, which I can only commend. I am a sucker for holiday charity, I suppose.
Several other coworkers took to the roads and visited distant places. A friend of mine even made it as far as Alaska.
Anyway, the point of this post is that the self storage community is not a simple thing by any means. Though we all celebrated the holidays, we did so in our own unique ways.

A short story
Kit had never seen anything like this in all of his years working in the self storage community. Watching from his office window as one load after another came in through the gate, he shook his head in awe as the new tenant unloaded pillows, one after the other, numbering into the thousands. Pillows? Why in the world would anyone have thousands of pillows? Who would have so many pillows that they needed a local furniture storage unit expressly devoted to their safe keeping?
In all of his years in this industry, he had seen some pretty interesting things going in and out of the units under his care. He watched with amusement as life sized mannequins were carried in to make their homes in the dark, enclosed units. He even assisted in the move in of an aging couples life long collection of cat statues and memorabilia of various kinds. But pillows? He just couldn’t imagine the reasoning behind such eccentricity. It was just one of lifes curiosities, he guessed, and something that he would probably never know or understand.
Later on that afternoon, as the last of the car loads of pillows were safely unloaded and the unit was closed and locked up with the tenants personal self storage hardware, Kit heard the bells on the door jingle as someone entered the office. He looked up from his desk to see the pillow man himself, coming in to ask a question about his monthly fee. Kit assisted the man and answered his questions, providing the excellent customer service that his company was known for. Before the man left, however, Kit just couldnt help himself. He asked the man why he had so many pillows. The answer that he received had left him humbled.
The pillows had belonged to the mans Mother, who had recently passed away. When his mother had been a young girl, her parents were very poor. So poor, in fact, that the girl never, in all of her childhood years, had a bed to sleep on or a pillow upon which to rest her head. She had slept on a bundle of sheets on the floor, a towel under her head for comfort, and so it went until the girl was ten years old, and her father finally found steady work that afforded them lifes necessities.
For the rest of her life, the woman collected pillows. They held such a special significance to her that she not only collected them, but she also donated them, by the hundreds, to homeless shelters and families in need, and she had done so for over fifty years, until her death. These pillows meant more to this mans Mother than any other belonging that she had owned, and that was why he had chosen to keep them.
After the man left, Kit though long and hard about the man and his Mother. He never ceased to learn something new in his job, dealing with people and their belongings like he did. To him, the self storage community was like a social classroom, a veritable education of what makes people live, act and think the way that they do. It was a classroom that he enjoyed being a part of.

First of all, we all have company email addresses. These addresses are very intuitive, so it is never hard for our representatives to communicate with one another. Of course, these email addresses make it very easy for our representatives to stay up to date. The faster we can communicate, the more quickly we can adapt to changing store policies.
Likewise, our call center has developed its own, unique social networking tool. By this, I mean to say that we have a social network website, which allows for our representatives to communicate rather easily from home. What is great about the social network is that it allows for our representatives to get to know each other more personally. We can use the site to leave personal comments for each other, publish blog entries, post poll questions, and upload pictures. It is actually a great deal of fun to browse the social network and learn a little bit about my coworkers.
At any rate, I believe that our self storage community is a healthy one. It is great that our workplace promotes healthy social exercises like these. I can say from experience that it is never fun to work in an unfriendly, unfamiliar environment. Things like company email addresses and social networking tools go a long way to make sure that our representatives enjoy their jobs, and that they know a little bit about the people they work with everyday.

The self storage community can be a real delight. Allow me to explain.
As many of you already know, I am a member of the night crew at our call center. Though we have our fair share of busy spells, the call volume does tend to abate as the sun goes down. True, we will be engaged in a number of side projects soon, but for now, we do have a little bit of time to get to know each other during every shift.
Honestly, one of my favorite things to do at work is to discuss gaming and technology with my coworkers. Never before have I worked in an environment quite so full of gamers and technology enthusiasts. What is more, we all have our own loyalties. I have had several discussions with my coworkers about the various advantages and disadvantages of particular gaming platforms, computer equipment, and the like. In the end of the day, I feel as though I have learned a lot about the gaming community . Ours is a motley crew, full of unique and interesting opinions.
I have also had several lively discussions with my coworkers about literature. I am an avid reader, and I am always eager to pass my books on when I have finished with them. Several of my coworkers and I have kept up a rather rigorous book trading schedule. Once again, here, I have learned quite a bit about them through their taste in literature.
At any rate, the self storage community is a colorful place. There are plenty of conversations to be had around our office.
