Jobs sack and cost-cutting in Australia

The Unions have started demanding the Rudd Government to stop supporting the banks that sends their jobs to offshore countries after ANZ announced yesterday that the banks have created 500 new positions in India. However, the banks cannot agree with the point that by moving their back-office or technology jobs to cities like Bangalore there will be employment slide in Australia. However, the Union of the of the Finance Sector said that the big banks of Australia have shifted over 3800 jobs in India over the last three years and the ANZ have described it as a “kick in the guts”.

Leon Carter, the national secretary of he Union said that it is very shameful to witness such shifting of employments to other countries when they have the potential human resources. He also said that Australian banks are greatly profitable companies and they are the one that could absorb more costs and provide a large number of employments to the national citizen. On the other hand, the bank makes its Bangalore announcement just a day after the labor force data indicates that the jobless rate of Australia rise to 5.2% during February which is the highest in the last four years. The ANZ has also initially confirmed that they will sack the back-office staff in Australia and shift the work in Bangalore with the end of 2009. However, late in yesterday’s afternoon they also admit that there will be no job loss in the country.

Moreover, a spokesman of ANZ also said that ANZ has not completely decided to retrench its Australian staff by moving their jobs to Bangalore. He further adds that a specific number of back-office jobs being shifted to Bangalore does not means that the same number of jobs will be lost in Australia.

The high officials of the bank said that they have employed many people in Bangalore from as early as 1989 and they will still look to continue their process of cost –cutting by shifting back-office jobs to offshore cities.

The Union on the other hand said that the government must withdraw their taxpayer -funded support like the deposit guarantee schemes of banks that are responsible for sending jobs to overseas. Mr. Carter admits that the message of Federal Government on the creation of jobs does not make any sense if it keeps on supporting the cost-cutting strategies. He also said that government cannot keep on saying that creating jobs is their priority work and just stay away and let thousands of different jobs disappear from the country by sending it to the overseas.

The announcement from ANZ came as the consequence of the global economic crisis with investment firms like Babcock & Brown going for voluntary administration because of their huge debts. Moreover, the meat processor company Hans has also announced to sack 400 jobs from their west Sydney factory. Over 8000 jobs have been sacked in Australia this year and about a quarter of them occur with cloth factory Pacific Brands. Many workers and their families have protested against the Pacific Brands at the Cessnock factory with demand for the redundancy money to be placed in their trust fund.

The latest news on further job cuts arrive as Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull, opposition leader, continues to accuse each other about the defects in the economy. Turnbull accused the Prime Minister for delivering a situation of higher debts and higher employments to the working class. However, Mr. Rudd said that the global recession was responsible for all the problems and no country remains unaffected by it.

Getting any kind of offshore job is not tough. There are only a few skills required or necessary to get into this field and most of them are related to your personality and not your formal education. In fact, most of the entry level offshore jobs like that of painters, cooks and crane operators do not require you formal education.

The prerequisites for getting such offshore jobs include you being in very strong physical and mental condition. If you are strong enough to work in the rigs and are also willing to do so, seeking offshore and onshore jobs becomes easy and quick. But before anything else, you need to be absolutely honest and confident while taking the screening tests. This is for your own good and only if you clear these tests, both physical examination and drug-screening will you be able to survive the difficult offshore jobs conditions.

Offshore jobs , in addition to the ability to work independently, require you to be a good team player in order to be able to maintain or keep peace, harmony and a friendly environment or atmosphere when you are away from the land for too long. Such jobs also usually demand that you be at least 27 years of age or more. You will obviously have an edge over the others if you have decent experience in your area of work. However, this is not to suggest that you will not get a job without the work experience. You can apply for those offshore jobs that do not require or necessitate any major skill sets and can promptly learn on-job. However, if you want to work as, lets say, a mud engineer or a ballast control person, you will require a minimum of high school education. And as the offshore jobs profiles get more complex, you will need higher degrees of formal education.

Now no matter how quick and able you are for the job, if you are not dependable and responsible, chances are either you may not get through or you may lose your job because of lack of these qualities.

Offshore jobs are exciting. Apart from offering attractive salary packages, they make you strong and provide the required experience. Also, offshore jobs require you to travel quite a bit, giving you a lot of exposure and a wonderful experience in terms of learning about different cultures and meeting people from all over the world. Imagine going to beautiful places such as Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Russia or the UK. Working in countries apart from the United States can be quite interesting and can fetch you a handsome pay. Also, since the risk involved in offshore jobs is high, you get paid accordingly. And yes, if you live alone and are away from land, you can save a lot of money on the rented apartment and safe keep all your possessions by keeping them in a self storage facility.

So if you have a keen interest and are ambitious, look for offshore jobs .

Many oil rigs companies offer offshore jobs . While most of these jobs involve a lot of labor, these companies ensure that employees have a good time while working for the company. They offer good compensation and living standards.

Most of the accommodations provided have facilities that compare with top class hotels irrespective of the fact that they are based in the middle of the ocean. Other than salary, expenses like food, board, and laundry are reimbursed by the company. Your travel and transportation cost is also covered by the company.

There are a large number of offshore jobs available with these companies at all levels. The jobs include that of Rig Mechanic, Rig Electrician, Rig Welder, Barge Engineer, Ballast Control man or Watch stander, Captain and Chief Engineer, Rig Medic, Driller, Crane Operator, Roustaboout and Derrickman.

Most offshore jobs in an oil rig have a 14 or21 day rotation shift. This means that you work for 14 days at a stretch and then take 21 days off. This means that you have more holidays than working days throughout the year. Many countries offer these offshore jobs but the ones that top the list are Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico, Russia, Norway, China, Canada, USA, Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The salary paid for each position varies. For e.g. supervisors are paid the US USD75,000 – USD100,000mark per year, roustabouts and roughnecks drill deck workers are approximately paid US USD300 per day. Specialized offshore jobs such as that of Driller are likely to make around USD56,000 per annum. Tool pushers and Drill Leaders are likely to earn around US USD75,000 – USD100,000 per year. Entry level positions typically make between US USD50,000 – US USD80,000 per annum.

Once you take up one of these offshore jobs , you will be provided with safety boots, coveralls and safety glasses. There are smoking rooms where safety matches are provided. For meals, you would need to take off your working gear and assemble in the eating area. There might be night shifts involved as oil rigs work all twenty four hours of the day.

You are not supposed to touch any equipment that you do not understand or know about. Having friendly relations with the chef and medics is a good idea. In the work premises, alcohol, drugs and other toxins are not permitted.

Each and every equipment has a specific color code on it and you are only supposed to touch those which have the current color code. Weapons including lighters, knives and other flammable items are strictly prohibited on the premises. Once you travel to the country where you have taken the offshore job, you will be transported to the work site through a helicopter. You might have to part with your mobile phone while riding in the helicopter.

There are many support offshore jobs also available such as medics and caterers etc. These support staff have a major role to play as they are the facilitators in these offshore jobs .

If you are interested in offshore jobs , you must turn to the oil and gas industry. Vast opportunities are going to be created in this sector, as half of the industry workforce will retire in the coming decade. This will create a tremendous shortage of labor for companies involved in energy and drilling projects. So, it is not wrong to say that a golden era for offshore jobs is about to start.

The year 2009 brought a flood of job opportunities overseas due to the huge shift in financial scenario. During the onset of recession, companies were busy downsizing. Now, as the economy is struggling to rise beyond the troubled waters, companies are naturally experiencing a shortage of workforce. There are a number of vacancies now. This is the right time to brush your skills and start looking around for offshore jobs in your preferred sector.

You can find innumerable offshore jobs as cooks, chefs, galley hands, night bakers, stewards and stewardesses, storing house managers and guards, housekeeping and cleaning staff, painters, welders, radio operators, electricians, and many more.

Catering is another promising sector that has hundreds of offshore jobs . This industry usually works on contracts. The catering and food service firms manage this industry and outsourcing is a common thing here. The catering contractor is accountable for all aspects of food service including snacks and meals, and arrangements for special occasions and holidays. The offshore catering service is also responsible for the hygiene and maintenance of the kitchen and dining hall, accommodation for staff, and recreational areas. It is thus a demanding as well as an exciting industry. No wonder offshore jobs in this sector have seen a boom in the recent years.
It is easy to start at entry level offshore jobs . Even if you are loaded with huge land-based experience, you need to get down a couple of steps in your success ladder and start from scratch in offshore jobs . Although jobs of painters, technicians, radio operators, cooks and stewards, and storeroom personnel do not ask for offshore experience.

The storing market in the US and outside has witnessed a huge surge in space demand. Thus, the competition has turn out to be stiffer. This has in turn created a large number of job opportunities as lumber room staff, managers, guards, and transportation professionals. You can find offshore jobs in this sector with ease.

The most up-to-date craze is to convert realty material goods into warehouses which create opportunities as brokers, architects, designers, consultants, and others. But, it is not just about opening a warehouse it is about surviving in the market. For this, you need sound strategies and competent staff.

While sailing off to a foreign land, you must be quite sure of your decision. Do think about it and make a well-versed choice as offshore jobs may look to a certain extent lucrative and fascinating, but they require a great deal of diligence and skill to survive the cut – throat competition.

If you are interested in offshore jobs in the gas industry or oil rigs, there are several facts about the jobs that you must be aware of. Let us take a look at the positive aspects and a few negative points of these jobs.

• Jobs in oil rigs can strain you physically, mentally and emotionally. You will have to work at an offshore location in the middle of the ocean for extended periods of time. For some, it can be hard staying away from home and loved ones and having to live with complete strangers in confined spaces.

• Offshore jobs bring in more pay than jobs on shore. Entry level employees typically earn around USD 50,000 to USD 80,000 per year. Professionally and technically qualified employees are paid around USD 70,000 to USD 220,000 per year. The reason for these sky-high payments is because the demand for offshore workers far exceeds the availability of people interested in offshore jobs .

• There are plenty of positions available in oil rig fields. Some of these offshore jobs include -

o Storekeeper
o Crane operator
o Electrician
o Driller
o Floor men
o Painter
o Rig mechanic
o Rig welder
o Ballast controlman
o Barge engineer
o Safety man
o Rig medic
o Chief engineer
o Sub sea engineer
• Most offshore jobs require you to stay on the location for weeks or even months. Consequently, you need to be in excellent physical condition and must have a clean bill of health. In many offshore areas, medical attention may not be readily available. So, you may not qualify for offshore jobs if you harbor certain health risks.

• Due to the strenuous work conditions, most rig companies implement measures to ensure that the time you spend at the location is an enjoyable one. In many cases, employees with offshore jobs are provided with excellent accommodation that is on par with the standards of 4 star hotels even in the middle of the sea. Additionally, all other expenses that you may incur while onboard will be met by the company. These include food, laundry, accommodation, transfers and travel costs.

• There are also certain tax deductions for offshore jobs . The United States government has issued laws that are intended to encourage people to accept positions in oil rigs or other risky positions out of border. Consulting a lawyer will help you assess if the position you are interested in comes under this category. Jobs that fall in this section are entitled to large tax deductions. For instance, if you are earning USD 80,000 and if the law permits a deduction up to USD 80,000, you may not have to pay any taxes for your income.

• Offshore jobs can open up chances for traveling to different countries. If you are an avid traveler, you are sure to love working in unique locales like Alaska or the Gulf of Mexico. You can also have lots of fun exploring these areas during your time off.
Although the physical strain and risk is greater for offshore jobs , people continue to choose this field since they are ensured attractive compensation for all that.

Despite the economic downturn, opportunities for offshore jobs continue to grow. Most of these jobs involve those on the oil rigs and in the gas industry, though there are jobs on offer in other fields as well. If you are interested in jobs on oil rigs or in gas industry, a little research will show that there are plenty of jobs in store. These jobs are physically taxing, but you take home a big fat pay packet each month.

Even with little or no experience on an offshore job on an oil rig, the pay is more than you can expect onshore jobs, and if you happen to be an experienced hand, your take home pay is unbelievable. The reason being there are more offshore jobs of this nature than the people available to fill them.

Whether on an oil rig or any other industry, offshore jobs require you to be away from your home for long stretches, maybe for months together. Your physical condition needs to be good, and you need to have a clean and healthy medical record. Merit is one thing about offshore jobs , but you need to be medically fit as you may be employed in places where medical care leaves much to be desired. You may not qualify if you happen to be someone with a health risk.

You also have to be careful when applying for offshore jobs . You need to evaluate the background of the companies you are talking to. These are good paying jobs and your suspicions must rise if the pay offered seems too good to be true. Whether it is a short term job or one of the longer duration, you also need to look at the recruiter who approaches you, or whom you approach for the job.

You need to check the recruiters background as well as that of the company offering the offshore jobs . This is true for shore jobs too but more so where jobs on offer are offshore. Working on offshore jobs will be quite enjoyable depending on the company that recruits you.

Employers of people working on oil rigs make sure that they have an enjoyable time on board. You may be living in the middle of the ocean but you may find that your living accommodations rival those of a 5 star hotel Whether you are working as a driller, derrickman, crane operator, sub sea engineer, chief engineer, or in any other capacity, most offshore jobs on oil rigs call for a rotation of 14 days on 21 days off. These are tough jobs but never stress you out.

As mentioned, offshore jobs are better paying jobs for the reason that you may be putting yourself at a risk. The better pay compensates you for the risk involved.

Tax is something you need to talk with your tax consultant regarding your job offshore. Possibly you could be entitled to tax deductions. There are certain laws in the United States that encourage offshore jobs and your accountant is the best person to inform you about this.

There are a lot to things to consider when you are trying to find the job that is going to make you most happy. A lot of what will make you happy depends upon your situation in life. If you are married with children and want to stay in one place then you are in a very different frame of mind than if you just got out of high school and want to find work somewhere and discover your independence. For the latter, finding offshore jobs might be something to consider. Offshore jobs are perfect for a young man who does not have any ties and wants to get out in the world and experience some manual labor.

If you are the right candidate for offshore jobs, then having one could not make you happier. However, there are a lot of stipulations if you are interested in an offshore job because these jobs are intense and require a lot of hard work. First of all, you need to be in great physical condition. If you are applying for offshore jobs they are going to want to see how strong you are and how much you will be able to lift and handle when you are working. Offshore jobs require a lot of physical endurance and rigor and even if you are already strong, you will be sure to gain a lot more muscle and strength once you do have an offshore job. Also, all offshore job employees must not only have strength, but they also must be in perfect health. They cannot have any diseases or illnesses if they want to work an offshore job because they will need to stay healthy and strong in order to work and be productive. Do not bother applying for offshore jobs if your health suffers because it will just be a waste of your time.

You will be required to undergo a complete physical examination before you are accepted for any offshore jobs, so be aware of that as well.

Not only do you need to be in great physical condition to be hired for an offshore job, but you should also be aware of what offshore jobs entail.

If you work an offshore job you are working off the coast and often pretty far out at sea. This means that you will not be coming home every night. Instead, you will live out at sea for weeks or even months sometimes. Of course you will be surrounded by your co workers, and most likely friends, but you will not be exposed to outside society for weeks at a time. For many, especially those with a family, this does not work. If you have someone you can’t bear to be away from for long periods of time or if you have children, then offshore jobs would probably not be the best idea for you. However, for those who have no ties to their home and can wander and be away for long periods of time, offshore jobs are perfect. Be fully aware of this stipulation before you sign any contracts for an offshore job. If you have a job you hate and are unhappy at, you will not enjoy your life.

Offshore jobs are great for those who are in good physical condition, strong, and do not have any strong ties to their homes. However, if you do not fall under all these categories, offshore jobs are probably not for you.

Our current, American job market has people looking for employment in previously unlikely places. Of course, in light of recent circumstances, offshore jobs have become rather appealing to some. Indeed, while these jobs are, inherently speaking, a bit more risky than office jobs, they do come with very distinct advantages. If you are new to the world of offshore jobs , allow yourself to consider the possibilities therein. Likewise, allow yourself to consider a few specific scenarios.

While small, the fishing industry is well known for how well it treats its employees. Indeed, fishermen typically work on a tour by tour basis, meaning that they are allowed several months of downtime every year. Of course, it goes without saying that fishing tours are, at the end of the day, rather risky. Crab fishing, for example, is known to be one of the riskiest professions in the American job market. With high risks, though, come high rewards. If you are willing to accept the risks of working out on the open ocean, then fishing may be one of the offshore jobs to keep on your list.

Of course, you can always consider working on an oilrig. This, too, comes with its own set of risks, but once again, the rewards are well worth it in the end. As far as offshore jobs are concerned, oilrig positions are rather lucrative. It bears mentioning, here, that oilrig jobs do not always involve manning the drills. Indeed, if you have a professional SCUBA diving license, you can get a job as a rig inspector. Typically speaking, rig inspectors are hired on a contract basis. Once hired, they are responsible for conducting routine inspections on all of the underwater components of the given oilrig. If SCUBA diving does not suit your fancy, you can always put your engineering degree to use. Granted that you have such a degree, you may be able to secure a position as a rig supervisor. Generally speaking, this position will involve overseeing the day to day operations of the rig. Oilrigs house many more kinds of offshore jobs , of course, so if you find any of this interesting, be sure to conduct a little bit of research. Surely, one of their offshore jobs will suit your qualifications and priorities.

If you have a medical background, you may consider going into the coastguard. The coastguard, of course, is going to put you in very close contact with all sorts of offshore jobs . You will, in no time at all, be familiar with the spectrum of offshore jobs that are out there. That, of course, and you will be able to make sure that all of those hard working professionals stay safe on a day to day basis.

Offshore jobs , once again, come with their own set of risks. Generally speaking, though, offshore jobs are also going to come with proportionate rewards. If you are interested in checking out this emerging market, then do not hesitate to check your local area for listings.

An offshore job is the one in which people take the job for a business party who want its staff to perform operations in a country other than their own. The country chosen for offshore jobs should be such in which the product and services produced are not consumed. This complete process is referred as off shoring. The countries having high wage rates and salary packages within generally enter into off shoring jobs. The sector of customer services and InfoTech industries like content writing, programming, functioning and data entry are generally off shored by USA and UK. This consequently adds to the direct profit of the company which has outsourced its work. Often the adversaries put up a topic that provides offshore jobs and becomes a major cause of drop down in domestic profit and employment of the country offering offshore jobs.

The entire industry of offshore jobs can be broadly classified into three categories:

The very popular sector of business process outsourcing, commonly known as the BPO industry is a major part of the offshore job industry. It is process of technology leverage. For instance, the very common example of managing human resources, offshore payroll outsourcing, call center operations and accounts management make a vital part of offshore jobs. Generally the BPO sector involves the management of software, processes and the working staff. Business process outsourcing jobs have huge dependency upon the information technology sector as the entire process is based upon internet usage. So, at times it is also termed as ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services).

The next major sector in offshore jobs is Software Research and Development. It can also be termed as offshore software development or offshore programming. Companies prefer to go for offshore software development services as the cost of local service providers is available on a higher note.

Last is the Infrastructure Technology Outsourcing, which is commonly known as ITO. It is a fact that the technology used in infrastructure is the groundwork of any business organization. Therefore for unsurpassed functioning of software and application infrastructure technology outsourcing is done. The off shoring of developmental technology is considered to be economical for the companies as it inexpensive and within the budgets of the company. It is also easy to find skilled labor if there are no geographical constraints. The small firms are laid down in foreign nations in the remote areas where manpower is available at minimum cost.

Mentioned above were the basic types of offshore jobs. But that is not all; a few basic criterions upon which off shoring jobs are directly dependent are:

There should be a vast cost difference while making the entire process offshore.

Tele-work should be thorough and highly dependable.

Highly relevant content should be obtained whenever off shoring is opted.

Internet facilities in the area should be uninterrupted.

An easy set up should be available.

As a characteristic feature the offshore work is highly repetitive in nature.

Due to the above mentioned advantages, the offshore jobs have become a trend in the developing countries in the present times. High cost advantages and unsurpassable quality of work is the basic objective of outsourcing, and if one understands them all then there is no reason why an organization should not go for it.

Are you looking forward to make career in the offshore jobs? If your answer is yes, then it is certainly a very wise choice as these days the cruise ships industry is burgeoning fast. All the successful cruise lines have almost doubled the number of fleets and the employees for their cruise jobs. With such rapid development, it is expected that by the next year there will be about 50,000 new offshore jobs available for all those who are keen for this industry.

If you are looking for a good offshore job then first and foremost what is required is to decide over the type of the job you wish to get in to. Many of the possibilities of getting a good offshore job are largely dependent on your area of interest, when you make an application, your resume and your qualifications along with the current openings. Therefore, it is important that the application is made on time while there is an opening and for specific jobs only. You really need to study well the descriptions of different job positions very carefully so that you know in advance if the offshore job is the right one for you or not.

When you are called for the interview by any specific cruise company, it is crucial that you be all prepared to handle all kinds of questions that are targeted at you to test your competence and capability. For this, you should be prepared with all the information and background knowledge of the concerned cruise company you are going for a job. You may be asked several questions about the company itself to know how keen you are to work with them. Then it is very important that you carefully follow all the regulations and instructions as mentioned by the cruise company while you write your resume. To add, always send the resume along with a well-written cover letter. The most important features and pints should be highlighted in the cover letter defining briefly about you along with writing why your candidature is suitable for the available offshore jobs post.

You will be sent with the application forms once the cruise lines company selects your candidature and assesses positively. Many oil rigs are situate in isolated areas so, you must posses an independent disposition to be on your own while at work.

Furthermore, the accommodation facilities and all the other basic necessities are very well taken care of at the oil rigs. The rooms you are provided with are spectacularly decorated and have all the facilities you can demand of; there is an internet access, free meals and great gym facilities as well. In fact, there are special smoking locations also if you are a smoker.

Usually the workers with prior experience are preferred for the offshore jobs.
