Four Tips for Long Term Car StorageBy admin on December 10, 2009 | No Comments
Car storage is not just about parking it at a safe place, locking it, and then leaving the vehicle. There are several things that you need to take into your careful consideration while you are storing your car in a car storage , especially when kept for longer period of time. You might have more cars in your garage than you actually use. There are people who use a particulate type of car only during the winter season. They store other cars in a car storage unit during the cold months. If you are one of them, you must know how to prepare a car for long-term car storage . Following is a brief rundown explaining how to go about it.
Gas Tank Must Be Full
When it comes to car storage , the first thing that you have to do is to make sure that the fuel tank is full. If the tank is not full, the gasoline will absorb high amount of water, which is not good for the health of your car. It will be better if you use some additives like Dry Gas or Sta-Bil. After mixing the additive thoroughly, you should drive the car for at least fifteen minutes so that it flows throughout the fuel system.Check The Engine Oil
Many people store their cars in car storage unit with dirty oil in its engine, and when they take their car out after a couple of months, they wonder seeing a premature bearing failure. The oil that is contaminated with water and acids also causes rust inside the engine. So, if you do not want such unpleasant surprises, do not forget to change the engine oil before storing your car in a car storage facility. In fact, if you are not going to use your car for more than three months, you are also recommended to squirt a good lubricant liberally into the cylinders after removing the sparkplugs. If you do not perform this exercise, the piston rings will soon end up rusting on the inside of the cylinder walls.Use Lubricant Spray In The Engine Area
To provide optimum protection to the engine area, you are also advised to thoroughly coat the entire metal surface that is exposed with the help of a good lubricant spray. The volatile carrier in the lubricant will be evaporated after a few minutes, leaving behind a protective film on the carb bodies, coils, hose clamps, and other parts within the engine area.Washing And Waxing
Washing and waxing of your car is also a must-do task before you store it in a car storage facility. You must apply a good wax on the entire car after washing it thoroughly. While you are cleaning the car, you should not only wash just the outside, but the inside as well. You do not, obviously, have to wash the inside – you only have to clean it properly. Besides that, make sure that your car is completely dry while you are putting it into the car storage house. So, you should wash the car accordingly, in a way that it should get sufficient amount of time to get dried. Most importantly, if you are seriously concerned about the performance of your car, you are strongly recommended to take it out of the car storage facility at least once every month and go for a short drive.

Guaranteeing Your Local Car SafetyBy admin on December 10, 2009 | No Comments
Putting your car into local car storage means you would not have to worry about its safety and security for the entire duration till it is warehoused. Having said this, there are a few precautions you need to take to ensure that you retrieve your car in as good a condition as when you put it into the warehouse. While this is not because the local car storage does not offer you the best facilities, but because cars are not like any other belongings you might put into a warehouse. They need special consideration, and wear and tear can occur just by leaving the vehicle idle. That is why we have put together these tips to help you keep any kind of damage at bay.
- First, you do not need temperature-controlled local car storage units to warehouse your car. Most vehicles are designed to resist natural forces, and so, can well be stored outdoors. However, during the harsh winter months or the rainy summer ones, you might want to place the car indoors. In order to do this, all you need is a simple garage like local car storage unit. Storing the vehicle outdoors is sufficient enough as well. You can cover it with plastic sheets or tarpaulin, and it will be protected.
- You do, however, need to take significant precautions to make sure that the engine and the interiors of the car are not affected by moisture, rodents, and general wear and tear. Make sure that while storing your vehicle at local car storage , your gas tank is completely filled. You can also use one of those special stabilizing additives to prevent the gas from evaporating. If it does evaporate, moisture might get accumulated in the tank which could lead to rust.
- Make sure that the oil is changed. Leaving the oil dirty might cause the engine to rust and you definitely would not want this to happen. Some experienced local car storage users even advise that you remove the spark plugs while storing your vehicle for a long time. This will help prevent the piston rings from rusting against the cylinder walls.
- Use car jacks to lift the vehicle up at your local car storage so that your tires are relieved from some of the weight. This will help them last longer and prevent them from getting worn out, even when your car is stationery.
- If your car is a convertible, make sure that you keep the top up. If you leave it down during the time your car spends at the local car storage facility, there are chances of its getting creased and spoilt.
- Now rats and other rodents is not something you would like to think off when choosing to put your vehicle into a local car storage unit. However, you need to be prepared just in case this does happen. To do this, you should place at least a bit of rat poison at strategic parts of the car, like under the seats and in the engine. This will act as a deterrent just in case your car does become a favorite of the facility rodent population.
Thus by following these simple tips, you can help ensure to retrieve your car in just as good a condition as when you drove it into its spot at the local car storage . However, do make a detailed condition report of the car while checking it in. This could help you make a comparison when you are removing the vehicle, by which time you have probably forgotten all the tiny details.

Damages
Surely, reader, you have suffered losses similar to my own. No doubt, you have, at some point, left your car parked on the road for a bit too long. Surely, you have, at some point, awoken to the unwelcome sight of your damaged vehicle. No time of year is safe, in these regards. Be it winter or summer, parking an active or inactive vehicle on the road is never safe. You should never bother with such unnecessary risks when local car storage is so easy to find. If you feel that your car is at risk, simply pick up the phone book or take to the internet. In hardly any time at all, you will be able to find a safe place to store your vehicle.
My own vehicle is a classic. It is a rare model, one might say. To my tremendous detriment, I left my vehicle parked on the road last winter. Unsurprisingly, it was struck several times throughout the season. Not a single perpetrator left me with any insurance information, or even a note of apology. Of course, I can see the errors of my ways now, though I cannot do anything to change the past.
Local car storage would have saved a ton of money in the long run. With it, I could have maintained the quality of my vehicle. Now, I am going to have to put a significant amount of money into fixing it and restoring it. Take it from someone who has suffered the repercussions of irresponsibility, and always store your car if you feel that it may be in danger.

Risks and Rewards
Quality local car storage is not all that hard to find, although you should be sure that you are taking care of yourself. Indeed, storing any kind of vehicle with a bad facility could end up costing you quite a bit more than you initially expected. While your rent may be low, you are certainly placing your vehicle at risk.
For something as expensive as a vehicle, you need to make sure that you are making use of high end security features. The last thing that you want to do is return to your parking space to find that your stereo has been stolen. Worse yet, you would hate to return to your parking space to find that your car had been randomly damaged. With great security features and a clean facility, though, you can rest assured that your car is in good hands.
What you want to look for, here, is a facility that offers a host of security features. Look for a facility that has door alarms and video surveillance. Furthermore, look around for a facility that is going to keep strangers away from your vehicle almost entirely. If that means that you have to rent a garage unit to keep your vehicle away from others, then so be it. At the end of the day, you will be happy that you have gone the extra mile to guarantee your own safety.
Here, then, you can see that local car storage does not have to be tricky, although you are going to need to know what you are looking for.

I hate the snowBy admin on April 14, 2009 | No Comments
Yes, I live by myself and have two vehicles. I also live in Minnesota where the snow likes to fall heavy in the winter time. I commute 45 minutes both ways to my job and I have to be able to get there no matter the weather conditions. It was getting to be about impossible with my two door car to get out on the slippery road conditions. That is why I decided to purchase a four wheel drive truck that is more capable of handling those type of whether conditions. However, I do not have a garage for my car, and I do not want to leave it out in the blistery winter winds and snow.
I leave it at my local car storage facility. I know it is protected in its storage bin. That way the car is safe and there is no snow falling on it. Also I have 24 hour secure access to my car at the local car storage building so I am able to stop by and start it up and let it run for a few minutes so it will not get locked up and the fluids will not freeze.
I have to keep my car for obvious gas reasons. In the summer time Minnesota is beautiful and the car does really well on the highway and gets way better gas mileage than the truck does. The car saves me a lot of money with todays gas prices shooting through the roof. The storage facility also serves in the summer for my truck. It is a win win situation.

Local Car Storage StoriesBy admin on February 27, 2009 | No Comments
I just took a rather saddening phone call from a customer looking for local car storage . Allow me to tell you her story, as I think that we can all benefit from hearing it.
This caller had left her vehicle on the road for several weeks. Though the weather was steadily getting worse, she figured that her neighbors were good enough drivers. She figured that she could safely leave her vehicle on the road regardless of how bad the winter storms became.
One night, her town was struck by a powerful ice storm. She did not move her car. Rather, she went to bed, confident that her neighbors would drive carefully. Imagine her frustrating when she woke up and found a sizeable dent in the side of her car. Her paint was chipped away, her door would not open, and the chrome around her car had been irreparably damaged. All evidence pointed to the fact that someone had struck her car. What is worse is that this person did not leave their name or insurance information. She was left without anywhere to go.
Needless to say, she began to call around for local car storage . She decided that her blind faith had cost her more money than a storage bill would have, and she lamented her choice to leave her car on the road. Though the damaged vehicle was not her primary mode of transportation, it was important nonetheless.
To those of you reading this article, beware of ice storms and reckless neighbors. If you want to guarantee that your vehicle stays safe, find a good self storage unit and keep it out of reach.
