  • Beware Of The Money Pit Under Your Hood
By admin on December 27, 2009 | No Comments Comments

Before you buy your first car, there are many things to consider beyond the price listed on the sticker in the window or classified ad. A car may be a necessity to keep your job and take care of your family, but it is not an investment that will pay off in the long term.

Most likely, your car will end up costing you more that you will sell it for when the time comes to trade it in. This is a necessary cost that most of our families live with, and while the return on you dollar may not be a profit, a car will offer many other benefits that can enhance your lifestyle.

You should weigh the pros and cons carefully.

Some of the hidden costs of car ownership include the cost for car insurance coverage . This is a mandatory cost for any registered vehicle, so if you must buy a car, make sure you are eligible for insurance and can afford the rate.

If this is your first car, it is a good idea to shop around for the lowest car insurance rate before you walk onto the lot of a dealership. If you are younger than 25 years old, you should be prepared to pay a higher premium than a more experienced driver.

If this is not your first car, but you have had driving trouble in the past such as DWIs, DUIs or excessive speeding tickets, then you must make sure you have a current drivers license. You will certainly be charged for high risk car insurance rates , so you should definitely talk with a few providers about what class or model of vehicle you can afford to insure.

Car insurance is not optional in the United States. However, the level and deductible you pay for is somewhat optional.

If you are buying a car and taking a lein against it, the lending institution may require you to keep full coverage on your vehicle .

If you own the car outright, you may elect to only hold liability on your car, meaning damage done to another vehicle or party will be covered by your insurance provider . This is usually the minimum level of car insurance required by most states.

Beyond carrying insurance on your car, there are other maintenance fees you will have to pay to own your car. This includes routine oil changes and minor fixes. These costs can range anywhere from 30 to 50 dollars every 3 months or so.

Of course, you can lower your cost by learning to change your own oil and learning a few basics about car maintenance.

Tires, body work, parts replacement and more can all be unexpected expenses. If you prepare for that ahead of time by setting a little money aside or knowing you have a credit card balance to use for these fixes, your car ownership experience will be less stressful.

The obvious cost associated with owning a car is filling the tank with gas. These days, the cost of gasoline may be a major concern of yours, and rightly so. It may cost more on the front end of a purchase to buy a car with better gas mileage, but over time the cost of purchase may be recovered and even let you come out ahead.

So, before you purchase a new hot rod or mini van, consider your lifestyle and budget for the maintenance of your new car.

  • Car Insurance Is Worth It
By Guest on September 30, 2009 | No Comments Comments

Even though I knew it was probably not a good idea, I drove with only liability car insurance because I did not want to pay for anything more than that. I knew I was a good driver and I trusted myself behind the wheel. All of my friends had been in accidents but not me. I had a perfect driving record. And good thing, considering I did not have anything more than liability car insurance to take care of me if I did happen to get into trouble. I figured that as long as I never any damage to my car I would be ok. My parents paid my car insurance up until I was eighteen, and then they told me I was on my own. I told them I had full coverage and they never even thought to check. They probably trusted me too much to want to ask for proof.

My job at a local department store did not in any way pay me enough money for me to put a couple hundred of bucks down every month for full coverage car insurance. That just seemed ridiculous to me. If I really did pay for full coverage car insurance I would be spending almost half of what I made every month on only that. I barely had enough money for all the stuff I wanted to do and buy without having to worry about paying even more for car insurance than I already was. Besides, I never had to drive more than ten minutes or so to get anywhere I wanted to go. Everywhere my friends and I went was in our area and I always felt safe behind the wheel in our town.

Of course, you can probably guess where my story is headed. It was raining one night pretty hard but my friends and I were bored and we wanted to go to a movie. I volunteered to drive since I was the only one who had a car that could fit all of us in. The roads were wet and it was hard to see, but I drove slowly and carefully the whole way there since I knew if I got into an accident I would not have the appropriate car insurance if I did happen to get into an accident. After I did change my car insurance, I was always anal about being a really good and careful driver. We made it to the movies just fine and by the time we were done and headed back home the rain had ceased.

We all piled into my car and we were laughing and talking about the movie. I pulled onto the road and started driving the speed limit since I did not have to go slow anymore because it was not raining. Well, as I was rounding a curve we hit a patch of water and my car started spinning. I freaked out and started pumping the brake as fast as I could, but nothing seemed to help. This whole while I was praying and wishing I had better car insurance in case anything happened to us. My car spun off the road and into a ditch where it landed on its side. We were all screaming and terrified, but miraculously none of us were significantly injured. My car, on the other hand, was pretty banged up.

After the accident my car insurance did not cover all the damages that had happened to my car. My car was considered totaled and my parents were furious that I only had liability car insurance. I ended up spending pretty much all of my money from then on for the next year or so saving to buy a new car and putting away enough for full coverage car insurance!

  • Car Insurance to the Rescue!
By admin on September 29, 2009 | No Comments Comments

With my driving… well thank goodness for car insurance! I don’t know what it is about me but I am just a mess on the road. I TRY to be careful, but somehow I am always crashing, bumping, or scraping my car or someone else’s in one way or another! Now… my parents are fed up with me. They keep telling me they are going to make me start paying for my car insurance. But, they know I don’t have any money and they don’t want to have the responsibility of driving me places, so I keep making uh oh’s on the road and car insurance keeps saving my butt!

Don’t think I’m a huge danger in my car or anything! I mean, I have not hurt anybody or anything! And it is not like I am drunk or high or anything when I get into these little accidents. No, I think I just sometimes get a little distracted here or there and then… ooops! So, I always assess whatever damage I did to my car or theirs (or the sign, building, or whatever else I happened to hit!) and then I call up my dad who gets on the phone right away with the car insurance company. I swear to you, they know him by name over there. It’s people like us that the car insurance people must love!! Because they can keep raising our rates and we keep on paying them. Well, actually, I wonder if I should say we are the people they must hate… since they have to keep paying for all my little mishaps. Hmmm… I bet they are losing more money off of us than what they are making. I’ll have to call and ask the car insurance company about that sometime.

Let’s see if I can remember all my little accidents that car insurance saved my butt after. Well, the first one happened a few weeks after I got my license. I was in a hurry from my friend’s house to work so I was trying to change in the car. Guess what? That is not such a great idea! I was in the middle of trying to pull my pants on when my foot hit the gas a little too hard and I rear ended the old lady in front of me. Boy was she pissed! Fortunately, my car insurance company took good care of her and her car and I never had to hear from her again. I can still see her stepping out of her car waving her cane at me and shouting at the top of her old lungs.

Another time car insurance saved me I was texting. I know, I know, texting and driving is a bad combination. But it was Gary, the boy I like, and he was inviting me to a party. So what else was I supposed to do? I did not want to ignore him! What if he thought I was not interested or something? Well, I guess I took my eyes off the road I little too long because I ended up going straight through a mail box. Let me tell you, I took that mailbox out! Well, once again, car insurance came to my rescue! They replaced the mailbox and fixed up my car (which has been through a lot!).  Thank you, once again car insurance for all you do for me.

Ok… I am embarrassed enough already. I don’t want to tell you any more of these stories because I know you are totally probably judging me right now. Well, I’ll try to be a little safer on the road because I definitely do not want to hurt myself, or anyone else for that matter. However, it is always nice to have the knowledge that if I need it, I always have car insurance !

  • You Better Have Auto Insurance!
By Guest on September 28, 2009 | No Comments Comments

Could you imagine getting into an accident without having the necessary auto insurance to cover the damages you caused? I guarantee that would be one of the worst feelings ever. I know that auto insurance is expensive and all (everything is these days!) but it is so much more expensive to cause damage to property that you cannot afford to pay for. If you cannot afford to pay the insurance then don’t drive! First off, it’s illegal, and secondly, it is just too risky not to have auto insurance for yourself and everyone around you.

I started thinking about how expensive accidents can be and how important auto insurance is a couple months ago. I was driving from St. Louis to Columbia, and I was actually really enjoying my drive. Sometimes, I am anxious and bored on that drive because I have to do it so often, but that day it was nice out, and I was in a peaceful state of mind. I was at mile marker 186 and I could not find anything I liked on the radio, so I bent down to reach for my Spice Girls CD. I took my eyes off the road for a fraction of a second, but as soon as l looked up, I realized all the cars in front of me had come to a dead stop. I slammed on my brakes as quickly as I could and sighed in relief when my car came within an inch of the car in front of me, but did not touch it. I knew if I got into an accident I would be covered because I have auto insurance, but it’s still scary to be at fault for an accident. Plus, your auto insurance rates are raised if you are responsible for an accident. Anyways, back to my story.

I was lucky I did not hit the car in front of me; the guy behind me, however, had been tailing me and hit me full on a moment later. My heart fell when I heard the sickening crunch. One of the first thoughts that sailed through my head was, he better have auto insurance! The second thing I thought about was how badly my car was messed up. We pulled over and when I got out to see how bad it was, I was mortified. My trunk was all mashed in and my bumper was half off. This was the brand new car my parents had bought me for a graduation present, and it was destroyed. Of course, I burst into tears as the twenty-something year-old dude who had hit me stood there awkwardly. Through my sobs, I managed to ask him if he had auto insurance to cover the accident.

Fortunately for him, he did have auto insurance. The damage to my car ended up being over $6,000. And that was just my car getting rear ended! I could never fathom paying $6,000 for an accident that was caused by me simply following too closely. Obviously, it is so much better to pay the $150 or so a month than indebting yourself thousands of dollars for something that could have been easily avoided by having auto insurance.  Especially if you are a poor college student, like myself. So, if you don’t have auto insurance, go get it! You will most likely end up regretting it at some point in your life if you do not.

  • Think About Cheap Insurance Carefully
By Guest on September 25, 2009 | No Comments Comments

Even though we all want to have cheap insurance, it is important for us to think about what paying less for insurance actually entails. If you do decide that you want to start paying less on insurance than what you are paying now, make sure that you find a provider out there who is still going to cover all the needs you want covered.

Insurance is one of those things in life that we all have to pay for that takes a huge chunk of change out of our pay checks every month. It would be very nice to have cheap insurance and not have to pay as much every month. However, usually when you are paying less for insurance it is not going to cover as much as you need covered.

Think about insurance that you buy when you get a new computer. As you are sitting in the store purchasing your new computer you are looking at how nice and new it is. You are not contemplating all of the bad things that could end up happening to it. Although it is probably tempting to buy cheap insurance on the computer, make sure that the insurance you buy is going to cover anything that could potentially happen to your computer. I had a friend my freshman year of college who got drunk and threw up on his computer. Can you imagine how he explained that to his parents? Anyways, he did have cheap insurance on his computer, but spills were not covered by the cheap insurance he had.

Think about it. Your computer sits on your desk and you often might drink a beverage while working on your computer. Perhaps one day your cat comes up and knocks that beverage over. Or, maybe you are just clumsy and you do it yourself. Once that sticky or thick liquid gets into the keys and internal workings of your computer, your computer is probably going to not work so well afterwards. It is very important when you buy your computer, that if you are going to get cheap insurance on it,  that it will cover any potential things that could happen to it.And the truth is, you never know what is going to happen. It is better to be protected from everything than only protected from some things.

When you think about cheap insurance, it is ok to have cheap insurance as long as it covers everything you want covered. But, think about those things we have insurance on that are more important than computers, like our cars, houses, health, and lives. It is important to never sacrifice something on your insurance plan just because you want to have cheap insurance. Paying a little more every month will pay off in the long run if you do have an accident or mishap that would not have been covered by the cheap insurance.

The most ideal situation, of course, is to have an insurance provider who offers cheap insurance, but includes all of the coverage. Make sure when you choose an insurance plan that you read through all of the paperwork very carefully so you know exactly what you are getting into when you buy cheap insurance. Usually, there is some coverage you will be missing out on if you do decide to go and get cheap insurance .
