Correct Usage of Laser PointersBy admin on November 3, 2009 | 2 Comments
Of all the different types of lasers, laser pointers are by far the easiest to come by and are the cheapest and most popular. You probably remember having them as a child and playing with them. They are available as children’s toys and also as key chains. Laser pointers are by far less strong and less dangerous than lasers used in the medical field and for welding and construction. Although they have similar components, they do not have as much power and cannot be nearly as hazardous.
Laser pointers were invented primarily for speakers and lecturers who need to use a pointer in a very large setting. Obviously, in a large lecture setting with hundreds of people, a speaker would need to have a very large screen or board of whatever they are giving notes on. The projector is becoming a thing of the past and many professors and speakers are turning to power points and smart boards for their presentations and lectures. Laser pointers make it very easy for them to quickly point at whatever example or fact they are talking about. These handy little tools are also very easily noticed and can be used from anywhere in the room that the speaker is. For example, many professors walk around the room when lecturing but often need to turn everyone’s attention to a specific part of their lecture’s notes. Laser pointers make this very possible because they can be used from a distance and still shine with the same brightness. With a regular hand held pointer, a speaker would need to be right next to their lecture and be able to reach whatever they want to point to. Laser pointers provide much more room and flexibility for the speaker in a larger setting.
Although laser pointers were invented primarily for this purpose, they are used for a variety of other things as well. Mainly, they are popular because children and teens find them entertaining and are amused by them. They often become annoying to many when used inappropriately because many adolescents enjoy taking laser pointers into movie theatres, plays, concerts, or other stage-like situations and shine them on the screen or people on the stage. This activity is very frowned upon and often laser pointers are banned from these situations. If you are caught shining one in a movie theatre, lecture, play, or the like, you will be in trouble for it. Although these instruments are not extremely hazardous to the eyes, they can create blind spots, confusion, and frustration for whoever is being shined at. Using laser pointers in this way is rude and should not be considered by anyone.
Something fun to do with a laser pointer is to shine it for a dog or cat. Most dogs and cats will be very interested in the light that laser pointers emit and will want to chase it around and try to catch it. This is very fun to watch and is very amusing since they never will actually be able to catch it. Also, you can give your pet a lot of exercise by using a laser pointer with it since he or she will just want to chase it around everywhere. Just do not shine the light into your pet’s eyes because that will be just as distracting and uncomfortable for them as it is for a human.
Laser pointers have a lot of great uses and are important tools for specific situations. However, they are often used inappropriately and can be very distracting and annoying in these situations. Make sure that you are being considerate whenever you are using a laser pointer.
