If you are planning a trip to Mexico but do not know any Spanish, do not worry too much about it. Most people who live in Mexico are fluent in both Spanish and English and will be perfectly capable of conversing with you in English. It would be a lot of work to learn all of the Spanish words and Spanish language before a short vacation. Plus, it would probably be extremely difficult to teach yourself or learn the Spanish language in the amount of time you had to prepare. Usually, when people plan vacations they do not know about them more than a year in advance and teaching yourself all of the Spanish words and rules in one year would be next to impossible.

Learning any language as an adult is very difficult, and in order to do so one would probably need to immerse themselves into the culture and country where the language they desire to speak is spoken. This is one of the only ways to become truly fluent in a language because you have to speak it and you hear it all day long in its natural form. So, do not worry about learning all of the Spanish words and being fluent in the Spanish language before a trip to Mexico, it will end up being a very stressful and difficult venture in the amount of time you have to prepare.

However, it is good to know and understand a few Spanish words before you take your trip. In fact, you probably already know a good amount of Spanish words if you took Spanish in high school or have been around Spanish speakers before. The Spanish words you will want to know are basic words which you will use regularly throughout your vacation at your hotel, sightseeing, or anywhere else. Of course, the most basic words you will want to know are how to say please and thank you. By showing that you have learned these very simple Spanish words and are willing to speak them, you are showing the people who live in Mexico and speak Spanish that you respect their language and their culture by taking the time to learn the basics of their language.  Make sure than when you do learn the Spanish words you know how to pronounce them as well as understand them in conversation. Pronunciation is one of the hardest things non native speakers must face when they do try to learn a language.

Besides knowing the basics such as please and thank you, you should also learn any Spanish words you think you might need to use regularly. For example, knowing how to say the names of your favorite foods is important, especially if you encounter a menu that is only in Spanish. If you do not know the words on the menu you can always ask your waiter to translate it for you. Likewise, it is important to know Spanish words for all of the drinks you like. When you do go on a vacation to Mexico, you will probably want to be drinking, eating, and relaxing, so ruling out potential language barrier for your favorite foods and drinks is a good idea. It is also a good idea to know the Spanish words for bathroom, hotel, and any other necessary thing or place you might need on your trip.

In conclusion, do not worry about learning the entire Spanish language before you take a trip to a Spanish speaking country. Instead, become familiar with a few of the Spanish words you will most likely need to say and use on your trip. Knowing and understanding these words can be very helpful and can make your trip less stressful.
