Farms
When I was fifteen, my dad randomly decided one day that he was going to buy a farm. I guess it was his mid-life crisis or something. Most of my friends’ dads did something normal, like buy a really cool car or take a vacation. But not my dad, no, I guess he thought it would be super awesome to buy a farm. Farms are cool and all, I mean I like animals, and it’s always good to have fresh vegetable and stuff, but our family was not prepared to start a farm! First off, we did not have any agricultural equipment. Now what the heck is agricultural equipment? I did not know until my dad decided he was going to be a farmer and all, but basically, the name agricultural equipment speaks for itself. In simple terms, agricultural equipment is the machinery and tools needed to plant crops. I never really thought about it before but there are so many different types of machines you need to have if you want to grow and harvest a lot of different crops.
So, firstly, my dad had to do a lot of research on agricultural equipment. He was not even sure what was what, what he would need, or even where to start. He discovered that if he wanted to plant crops he would first need to till the land. Tilling the land is getting it ready to plant seeds in. So, the first agricultural equipment he needed was all the equipment necessary for tillage. Now, I’m not going to go into the specifics or anything because it gets a bit confusing, even for me. But, he needed to buy a tractor, a plough, a cultivator, and a stone picker. All of this agricultural equipment to get the land ready for planting!
Now that my dad figured out what he would need to get the land all ready for planting, he had to do some research on what he would need in order to actually plant the seeds. He discovered he had to buy a seeder which actually spreads the seeds and fertilizer, and a planter which sows, or plants, the seeds. After the seeds are planted you then have to worry about fertilizing your seeds along with bugs and pests! Therefore, there is specific agricultural equipment designed for this annoying problem. A manure spreader fertilizes all the crops by spreading manure over the seeds and a sprayer can be used to spray all the plants so bugs and pests will leave them alone.
Sounds like a lot of agricultural equipment so far doesn’t it? Well, I’m not done yet! Now that the seeds are planted, fertilized, and protected, it is time to let them grow! While they are growing, it is necessary to have an irrigation system so they get enough water. Irrigation systems are basically similar to sprinklers, except much bigger! When the plants are finally done growing, it is then necessary to have the appropriate agricultural equipment needed to harvest the crops. A harvester, as I understand it, basically picks up the crops so you do not have to do it by hand!
Now I’m older , and my dad has purchased all of this necessary agricultural equipment for our farm. Starting in the spring he is going to give his first round of crops a go. I have a feeling I am going to be doing a LOT of work in the fields come March…
