In a world of luxury and extravagance, you may be wondering who hands out the stars to restaurants and fine dining establishments. It may seem like any old restaurant can tout a handful of stars next to their name. However, true 5 star restaurants are not as common as the imitations would have you believe. After all, there is no real consequence or rule about whether or not you may say your restaurant has 4 or 5 stars. Although if you proclaim too loudly that your restaurant is a fine dining, highly rated restaurant when, in fact, no true award has been given from an unbiased judge, then your restaurant, and thereby you, may end up with a little egg on your face.

Attaining the reputation of other 5 star restaurants is no easy title to aim for and if you are really going to go about doing it the right way and you will have your work cut out for you. The five star rating was originally only three stars, but was extended to provide more critique of several areas of criteria. Restaurant ratings have been a measurement of success within the culinary art world for nearly a century.

You can expect to see restaurants rated from one to five stars and as the number of stars increase, the menu, service, ambiance, decor, cleanliness and cuisine will all go up. And yes, you guessed it; the price usually goes up as the star ratings increase. Undoubtedly, 3 star restaurants will be less expensive than 5 star restaurants will be.

Cost may increase as restaurant ratings and stars go up, but indeed, the price of items on the menu has no bearing on the rating afforded to a restaurant. Being awarded a perfect 5 stars is more than just having expensive or great food and good service. Holding a five star rating means a restaurant is truly extraordinary.

In fact, 5 star restaurants are so extraordinary that there are only around 55 or so restaurants worldwide that hold the title from one of the most esteemed organizations in the world. And even more elite still, another critic organization listed roughly 15 perfectly rates restaurants in the North America.

It takes more than one great meal or perfect day to earn the accolade of having a 5 star award on your restaurant’s namesake. Time and consistency is a very large part of the equation of any serious restaurant rating guide.

With such an elite list of genuine 5 star restaurants in the world, it is safe to say that the majority of the population will not eat at a five star restaurant. This is not to say that restaurants less than extraordinary do not have just as succulent a menu or divine decor.

A 4 star restaurant is nothing to be scoffed at, and for the most of us, we would remember the meal for the rest of our lives, or at least a long time. Indeed, 4 star ratings will provide guests with an unforgettable dining experience; fresh, high quality food; outstanding presentations and polished service.

If there is a reason for fine dining in your future, consider that the star rating, when it comes from a reputable and qualified critic, so that you will be sure to find the perfect restaurant to celebrate and commemorate your evening.
