Orthodontics is a dentistry branch that involves correcting crooked or ill-positioned teeth and jaws. An orthodontic treatment leads to a better oral hygiene, enhancement of looks, and a set of teeth that can last your whole life. Doctors who study orthodontics are called orthodontists. They are required to take 2 years of education, in addition to the 4 years of dentisty program in a dental school that is approved by ADA American Dental Association.

There are many people who choose to live with crooked teeth all their life. It does not bother them. However, such teeth are difficult to clean and are vulnerable to tooth decay as well as periodontal diseases. Besides, ill-fitting teeth produce pressure on the chewing muscles. This may cause headaches, backache, neck and shoulder pain, and TMJ syndrome. Of course, they might mar your appearance too.

When it comes to the kind of orthodontics treatment your teeth need, an orthodontist knows best. For that, you need to undergo a clinical examination, get plaster models, special X-rays, and images done of your teeth, and give the complete medical as well as oral health record to the orthodontist. Only after the diagnosis can he or she tell whether you can go for orthodontics procedure.

The following are the conditions when you require orthodontics treatment-

    • Crossbite – this is a condition in which the upper teeth fail to fit slightly in front of lower set of teeth when biting.
    • Overbite – this condition is also called buck teeth. Here, the upper front teeth protrude ahead of the lower set of teeth.
    • Underbite – in this condition, the upper front teeth are too far back inside the mouth or the lower front teeth are too forward outside.
    • Open bite – in this condition, when the back teeth clasp together, there is space or gap between the biting surfaces of front teeth and or biting surfaces of side teeth.

All these conditions require orthodontics treatment. You may also need to undergo this procedure if there is

    • Spacing – these are spaces or gaps between teeth, which may be due to missing teeth or tooth that is too small to fill up the space.
    • Misplaced midline – the center of the upper set of front teeth is not parallel to that of lower front teeth.
    • Crowding – there is a redundancy of teeth in the mouth and the dental ridge cannot accommodate.

These conditions, too, need orthodontics . The tools required for treating the condition are of two types fixed and detachable. There are different kinds of dentistry tools. Only after a thorough orthodontics examination does the dentist or orthodontist decides what tools are needed in your case.

These orthodontics tools or devices help in moving the teeth to correct its position, they retrain muscles of the mouth, and also create an impact on the growth of jaws. The working principle of these tools is mild pressure application on the jaws and teeth. So, if you have teeth that are killing your smile, no need crying over your fate. With proper orthodontics and dentistry treatment, you can change your smile and fate.
