Self Storing is a Useful Public Service

Self storing is often considered a commercial venture and rarely, if ever, is considered as a public service utility. While it is true that the owners of store units run these units to make a living and create a decent profit, the value of these units to public cannot be underestimated. If you look closely, you will realize that a majority of people hire the service of rental warehouses because they have no other option to keep their belongings. Very few people use store units because of the sophisticated facilities available on the units. Most people consider such facilities as a bonus and only use them as a yardstick for selecting the agencies.

Why It Is Not Considered As A Public Service

One of the reasons why self storing is not considered as a public service is lack of glamorous origin. The business was established modestly in Florida in 1960s. It was, and still is, associated with realty business. For example, the rent of store unit is always directly proportional to the property prices in that area. At the beginning, self storing business involved renting out shabby rooms to who people want to keep the items that they could not store in their houses for various reasons. It had remained a modest business for about the first two decades. Many experts termed it as the poor cousin of realty business.

The business only prospered in 1980s and 1990s. The growth rate continues even now. However, the poor cousin tag refuses to fade away. Many people still consider it as an unglamorous business, though seasoned investors know that very few businesses have lower administrative expenses than do self storing business. As a result of its low profile, it never gets credit as a major public service utility.

One has to blame the storehouse owners as well in that they have not done enough to promote their business as a public service .

Why One Must Consider Self Storing As Public Service

Many urban areas face acute shortage of living space. Not only the cities are congested with buildings, but buildings are congested with people and their accessories as well. Hiring a rental store unit is an excellent option to free some space in the house. People have been hiring rental units for this purpose for decades.

The recent global monetary crisis has revealed why rental store units must be considered as a public service . As result of the sub prime crisis and credit crunch, many people lost their houses through foreclosures and forced trading. Some of them managed to find new, albeit much smaller, houses. The problem they faced was what to do with their home appliances and personal belongings.

In that scenario, people realized the public service angle of storing units and started storing their belongings and accessories in these units. Of course, they have to pay rent, but still it was better than taking a pile of baggage and hitting the streets.

Self storing owners enjoy the label of public service utilities. Still, they stick to the rules. They do not allow explosives and inflammable substances. Dead bodies and living animals too are prohibited. However, they allow pretty much everything else.
