Online shopping using a credit or debit card to purchase goods has become extremely popular.  The convenience of online shopping greatly contributes to its popularity.  As computers become increasingly prevalent throughout the world online shopping will also become more popular.  Without leaving one’s home a seemingly endless amount of goods are available online.  It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for new clothes, a good book to read, or a household appliance, an online vendor exists that sells it.  Since the internet never closes, and can be accessed from home, one can shop 24 hours a day, and doesn’t have to bother traveling anywhere.  This means enjoying the shopping experience from the comfort of your own home, and avoiding crowded shopping areas.  The money saved on transportation also makes online shopping more desirable.  Reducing traveling time also has environmental implications since customers who shop online don’t use as much energy traveling between many stores and transporting their purchases home.   

The wide selection of goods available and the ease with which a shopper can access them has contributed to the rise of online shopping.  Finding bargains has become easier with the advent of online shopping since one has a larger variety of stores from which to choose.  Many consumers also find the process enjoyable.  Visually stimulating product displays and creative descriptions add character to the online shopping experience.  Not having to pay sales tax on items bought out of state attracts many people to online shopping.  Sellers like online shopping too because they can sell goods without having to employ sales people.    

Two of the main problems with online shopping are shipping costs and customer confusion and dissatisfaction.  Many consumers cannot make a decision when shopping online because the website selling the item of their interest fails to provide adequate information.  The lack of physical contact with an item can seriously impede the shopping process.  Shoppers are often dissatisfied when they receive an item bought online because it does not meet their expectations.  Since the shopper cannot actually hold, examine, and use the item they buy, they are often disappointed in not getting what they had expected.    

Shipping adds an often unexpected price to items bought online.  Depending on the weight and bulkiness of an item, the shipping costs can be quite high.  It often helps to purchase multiple items from the same online retailer in order to save on shipping costs.  This allows the shipper to package all the items together rather than paying separate shipping costs for each item.    

Privacy concerns often arise for consumers paying over the internet.  Giving out personal information online can sometimes lead to unwanted solicitation and fraud.  While retailers put extensive effort into providing online security the chance for identity theft and credit card fraud still exists.  However, using a third party payment system prevents these types of problems.  Also, as online shopping becomes more popular and familiar to the public these concerns weigh less significantly on the minds of shoppers.
