Online Shopping
Online Shopping — By Shopping Blogs on January 13, 2010 10:19 amNot more than a generation ago, online shopping would have been a completely unintelligible concept to most people, as it still is to some! Now, it is estimated that nearly half of all adults have shopped online, and most of those have made actual purchases from a web-based retailer. Younger web surfers are not fazed by these figures, since shopping on the web is now common place, and most have made multiple online purchases. In an age where banking is done online, and services like insurance for home and automobile can be purchased via the internet, buying a pair of jeans, some music CD’s, or a mountain bike from web-based retailers seems very normal.
Statistics show that as high as 30% of internet users go online at least once a week to find shopping bargains, discounts, product reviews, and comparison shopping information, even if they ultimately head over to the near-by bricks and mortar store to make their purchase. The online retailers know that they are being used as a showcase for some who have no intention of buying over the web, but they are still managing to gain market share with every passing year. The low overhead costs that online retailers have compared with local retailers gives them a competitive edge when it comes to price. And they are exploiting that advantage, along with the convenience of online shopping from home for just about anything one would want, to achieve healthy profitability. A definite sign of the profits to be made from selling online is that most major retailers now have an online presence where shoppers may buy the same goods available in their local stores, but also expanded lines of products, since display and storage space on the Web is not bound by the size of a local building.
Online shopping is now an ingrained part of the culture, and is likely here to stay indefinitely. Savvy shoppers are discovering that great deals are available when shopping via the web, in part since dealers must compete in a truly global marketplace, driving down their prices. This reality means that more goods and services will be offered online in the years to come, and that consumers in increasing numbers will be taking advantage of internet shopping opportunities.
