My Funny Joke Attempt
Uncategorized — By Shopping Blogs on September 18, 2009 6:25 amEven though I want to be a comedian, for some reason I am just not very good at telling and delivering funny jokes. Ever since I saw Dane Cook for the first time, I fell in love with making people laugh. Unfortunately, I have never been good at telling funny jokes when I actually want to be telling them. I do make people laugh. It is just at all the wrong times.
As a kid, I was always trying to tell funny jokes to my friends and family. I would always beg to have them listen to me and I would get all excited to get to the punch line. Sometimes I would write out the jokes I wanted to tell and then get to work memorizing them so my delivery would be flawless. But, for some reason, it never was. I am not sure if I was finding the wrong kind of funny jokes or if my delivery was just off for some reason. My family would sit there and listen to me with a knowing smile on their face and when I finally got to the punch line they would let out a few fake laughs, give me an encouraging smile, and tell me that I had told them a very funny joke. I did not realize at the time, that they were humoring me and waiting for me to get done with my comedy routine so they could move on to whatever else they had to do for that day. My friends, on the other hand, laughed at me, not at my jokes and told me I was awful at telling and delivering funny jokes. At the time, I chose to believe my family because that is what I wanted to believe.
I did not let my friends bring me down, and I continued on with my hopes of one day becoming a stand up comedian. I was constantly looking for and making up funny jokes I thought people would enjoy. I would practice my routine in the mirror and I sure thought I was funny. I just hoped everybody else thought the same.
Finally, I got the chance to perform on stage when my high school put on a talent show. Because our school was small, anybody who wanted to was allowed to participate. I worked for weeks on my stand up routine, mastering all the funny jokes I was planning on telling. I memorized and modified my script and worked really hard at trying to deliver the punch line at the perfect moment. As the big date got closer, I became a little nervous but I felt confident in my ability to make people laugh with all of my funny jokes.
On the day of the talent show I was ready to go. I had the perfect outfit and what I felt like was the perfect routine. I got up on stage and delivered my routine with as much flourish and delivery as I could muster. Well, whenever I was expecting roaring laughter I got a smattering of reluctant and forced chuckles. I continued on with my routine trying to tell what I thought were funny jokes for the entire five minutes it was supposed to last. At the end, I got a very light smattering of applause that was, for the most part, sympathy applause.
