Clean Up Your Twitter And Get Your Updates Noticed
Twitter Follow Button — By Shopping Blogs on December 25, 2009 5:22 amIf you have a social network account on one or more websites, then you know the gravity these sites seem to have on you every time you login. You may innocently login to check your email. The next time you blink, the little hand on the clock has traveled all the way from the 3 to the 6 and you are late for making dinner. Looks like it will be a quick drive-thru meal again, which is good so you can hurry up and log back in to Twitter to see what new trend topic is hot.
If you are drawn to tweet and re-tweet with every new turn of the day, then you probably have a few hundred followers or even several thousand. There are several Twitter tools you can use to keep track of your followers, who you follow, organize your tweets, re-tweets and even help you decide who you should stop following and start following.
Many people join Twitter just to follow others. This may be to keep up with their favorite singer, blogger, news network, or other industry leading sources. In fact, over 80 percent of users on the site have 10 tweets or less. This is a testament to the fact that instead of sharing or updating, most users are listening and following others.
If you are trying to build up a very stable Twitter account, then you should carefully consider who you follow. Choosing to follow users who rarely update their accounts may not be the best idea for building an active account.
There are tools that will help you determine what other members have active accounts. There are even gizmos that will help you clean out your list of members you follow and empty out the inactive users.
If you can filter through and decide which members to follow, then you can begin making your account active and interesting to others. There are a few things to keep in mind when you post a new tweet.
First, the space is limited. Consider your words carefully and try to keep it simple. Part of the beauty of Twitter is that it brings social media down to a digestible feed that allows users to bypass all the fluff and get right to the topic at hand. So, use your 140 character spot to your fullest advantage.
Also, you should try to keep all your followers in the loop. If you are deep into a re-tweet, then you can hash tag or reference another member to signify important parts of your conversation so outsiders can follow along.
Of course, your updates should be compelling and interesting. Unless you are an uber-celebrity, your followers may not be interested in hearing about what you eat for lunch. You should try to provide relevant information to the crowd that you hope to capture.
Luckily, there are tools that will alert you when someone stops following you and these tools can even identify which tweets lead users to un-follow you. That is really helpful to know, so you can avoid the topics others find uninteresting or maybe even offensive.
If you keep in mind the goal of your update, who you want to see it and how you want them to feel, then you will be able to construct a very effective tweet.
