    Have you ever sat in the audience at a magic show or seen the magicians on TV when they hypnotize their audience members into doing ridiculous acts of goofiness or daring tricks outside their otherwise logical sense of mind?

    We often watch such a show and wonder if that audience member was planted there, are they really under a spell, what would you do if you were hypnotized? And then we tend to think we would never act so silly. Next, we fear the secrets we might reveal in a state of subconsciousness.

    While being hypnotized seems like a strange, magical or even dark art, approaches to psychotherapy are very different from mind tricks and games.

    In fact, the standard approaches to psychotherapy are very common and used by a large percentage of the populace. Groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, other addiction groups, marriage counseling and personal therapists are a few of the many forms of therapy.

    While these groups and counselors have established that the stress levels among Americans has increased, therapists also report that we are more likely to over eat, smoke, shop or just veg out in front of the TV before we seek professional counseling.

    The truth is that patching stress or anxiety with another addiction is sure to only worsen your stress and could cause you to spiral into depression. The answer is to find a group session or private therapist to help you overcome anxiety, problems in a relationship or concerns about yourself.

    The mystery surrounding approaches to psychotherapy may be part of what keeps us at bay from seeking professional help. You may picture a middle aged man sitting slightly back in his chair as his pencil jots down everything you say from the softened leather couch you lie on.

    This is far from the truth. While the exact technique will vary from therapist to therapist, the overall concept is that the counselor will support and direct a patient to explore the cause or root of a problem. Therapists also offer healthy advice on how to repair broken relationships, handle toxic relationships and love one’s self.

    If this all sounds like psychobabble to you, then perhaps you are not convinced. A therapist is really like the best friend you have. The one you put confidence in, share secrets or dreams and fears with. This friend may offer advice or just an ear, but the relationship between the two of you involves trust and care.

    In this way, a therapist is a healthy, unbiased party, there to offer advice and enlightenment to those who may not have a support structure or friend to confide in. In fact, having a friend to confide in who is utterly removed from your personal life can sometimes be freeing to an individual undergoing care.

    Therapists can specialize in one field or another, but approaches to psychotherapy are not limited to helping those with addictions or broken marriages.

    Stress management is a common issue for which therapists apply approaches to psychotherapy as they see patients. Therapists are able to help individuals feel less overwhelmed and put a priority on the things demanding their attention and obligation. Patients can learn how to manage their time and make time for themselves. It is not uncommon for a person feeling overwhelmed to find relaxation by picking up a hobby they use to enjoy but had long since forgotten.

    As you can see, therapists are not usually in the practice of making patients cluck about like chickens. While this may be entertaining for an audience, it is not a practical use of psychotherapy.

    Counselors and therapists apply the approaches to psychotherapy to promote well being and balance in the lives and minds of their patients.

  • How Psychotherapy Helped Me Get My Life Back on Track

    I never thought that I would have to go to psychotherapy. I had always been a strong and independent person and was always sure I knew who I was. Psychotherapy was another language to me. My husband and I were married for ten years and I could not have been happier. That is, until I came home early from a work trip one week to walk in on him and another woman. In our bed. That was definitely not going to fly, but I was so in love with him I thought I could make it better. Maybe I was not pretty enough, or maybe I was not giving him the attention he needed from me. Whatever it was, I was not going to let the man of my dreams slip through my fingers. The way I felt though, after seeing him with another woman, was impossible to shake.

    Psychotherapy began to be suggested to me as I slipped into a depression, all the while trying to be a better wife and lover. My friends were all concerned for me and wanted what was best for me. I knew that. However, I balked at the idea of having to go to psychotherapy. In my opinion, I was a strong woman and nobody was going to be able to help me but myself. Finally, in an attempt to save my marriage and myself, I decided to take their advice and just give psychotherapy a shot. If it did not work, which I did not expect it to, I would simply stop going. It was as easy as that.

    I made the psychotherapy appointment because I figured it would get all my friends off my back about it and I did not think it could hurt me any more than I already was hurting. By this point, I just wanted to feel happier and better because if I did not I would not be able to keep my husband happy. Even though I knew he was probably continuing his affair, I did not let myself believe it.

    At first I was not sure how I felt about my psychotherapist. Psychotherapy was not really like it was conveyed in movies. I did not feel like she was giving me the once over all the time, and she left all her note taking to a recorder, which was nice. Talking to her did not come easily the first few times but eventually, and I do not know how she did it, I began to open up. I felt like she was really listening and she helped me make a lot of realizations about myself, who I am, and what I want. Psychotherapy was beginning to feel like it was what I needed.

    Eventually, psychotherapy helped me to realize I did not need a husband who did not appreciate me for everything I had done for him. With my psychotherapists help, I was finally able to cut the cord from him and move on with my life. Since then, I have continued going to psychotherapy, and I have also been much happier. I have been focusing on myself, what I want, and how to make myself happy, for the first time in my life.  Thanks to psychotherapy I am finally happy in life and able to really be independent and secure with who I am.

    • Brief – A variety of approaches are used here. There is a special focus on one single problem here. The system is solution based and involves direct intervention. The problems are addressed at the root level.

    Psycho theraphy uses hundreds of approaches and new ones are springing up every minute. More often than not, it is seen that practitioners use a combination of systems and do not stick to any single one. They usually alter the system on the basis of the clients needs.

    History
    Psycho theraphy is believed to have been first used by a Persian physician and thinker called Rhazes. He was the chief physician of the Baghdad Hospital. Before this, any mental disorder was treated as originating from demons or due to other medical problems, and required the patient to undergo confinement, isolation and punishment.

    Psycho theraphy was developed scientifically for the first time by a neurologist named Sigmund Freud. His studies and analyses led to the development of techniques like dream interpretation, id, ego, superego, free association and transference.

For example, if a loved one dies or is significantly injured, the friend or family member might not be able to get through the stages of grieving and coping on their own. Sometimes, psychotherapy becomes necessary in order to help the person get through the coping process and move on from obsessing over the incident and the loss. Sometimes people feel that when they lose a loved one they no longer want to live and a psychotherapist will help them see why this is not the answer.

    Adolescence can be an extremely difficult time in a young person’s life for a number of reasons. The difficulties an adolescent faces can often result in depression, mood swings, and unpredictable or erratic behavior. Because of these consequences, adolescents often undergo adolescent psychotherapy to help them battle these issues and feel better about themselves as individuals.

    Adolescent psychotherapy was developed after child and adult psychotherapy because it was realized that it is impossible to look at adolescents as children or adults. This seems obvious, because they are neither; they are right in the middle. Adolescence begins with the onset of puberty and ends when sexual and physical maturation is complete. This begins in girls around age ten and in boys around age twelve and ends at the end of the teenage years. Because of this, it is impossible for adolescent psychotherapy to use the same strategies and tactics that one would use to treat children or adults.  A whole new set of psychotherapy had to be developed in order to be effective for the adolescents, who, as a whole, might just be the age group of individuals who are in need of psychotherapy the most.

    When developing adolescent psychotherapy, it was important to consider all of the different things adolescents are experiencing on a day to day basis. One of the biggest challenges all adolescents must face is puberty. Because of puberty alone, adolescent psychotherapy is needed. Although some adolescents get through puberty with flying colors, many are ashamed, embarrassed, or unsure about how they feel about their body changing. All adolescents go through puberty at different times, so there is also often nervousness and embarrassment about starting the puberty process late or early. The onset and timing of puberty is also linked to sexual activity, body image distortion, unhealthy behaviors, mood changes, and drug and alcohol abuse. Obviously, all of these things are addressed with adolescent psychotherapy for certain adolescents who are on the far end of the spectrum for any of these behaviors.

    Another reason adolescent psychotherapy is so necessary is because adolescence is a big step towards discovering ones identity. In order to understand themselves as individuals, many adolescents feel the need to surround themselves with a particular group of their peers.

    Oftentimes, friends begin to play a more important role and have more of an influence on an adolescent’s life than their family or parental figures. Because of this, peer pressure, whether it be positive or negative, plays a huge role in the lives of adolescents everywhere. If the peer pressure is negative, oftentimes adolescent psychotherapy is utilized in order to keep the adolescent on track for a healthy and successful path in life. Adolescent psychotherapy can play a very important role in helping the adolescent to understand their identity without needing to conform to a certain group of their peers. Also, because of all the physiological and cognitive changes adolescents are experiencing, adolescent psychotherapy can help them work through mood swings and irrational behaviors. Adolescent psychotherapy can teach adolescents strategies to keep their feelings in check and to think through their actions before performing them.

    Adolescent psychotherapy can help adolescents get through one of the hardest times in their lives. However, in order for adolescent psychotherapy to be successful, the adolescent has to be willing to partake in the sessions with an open mind and the desire to become an individual who makes smart choices and wants to find their individuality.
