Basics of Cooking
Cooking is an essential part of life because everyone needs to eat. Unless you are extremely wealthy and can afford to eat out every day, or if you have a significant other who makes all of your meals for you, you probably need to learn how to cook. Many people have a different idea of what cooking actually is. For example, if you prepare macaroni or ramen noodles out of a package are you cooking? Some would say yes, and some would say no. Regardless, understanding the basics behind cooking is a necessary part of life for most people.
One of the most vital things you should learn before you start preparing food is how to boil water. You will not need to know how to boil water for every dish you make, but, understanding how to boil water is most likely going to be an essential part behind many meals you will be cooking . For example, any dish you prepare that has noodles, rice, a number of vegetables, soups, hard boiled eggs, and much more, will require that you know how to boil water or another liquid substance. Don’t worry; boiling water is a pretty easy part of cooking. All you have to do is put the liquid you want to boil into a pan, put it on the burner, turn the burner on, and wait for the liquid to begin bubbling. Once it is bubbling, it is boiling. Make sure you watch the liquid before it boils. If you leave it on the burner while it is on and forget about it the liquid will most likely boil over and can end up being a huge mess.
Another basic aspect of cooking is grilling. Whenever you want to put surface heat onto a food and make it warm and crispy you will need to know how to grill. Grilling is used for meats, breads, pancakes, quesadillas, vegetables, potatoes, along with a number of different foods. By knowing how to grill, you can begin cooking steaks, grilled cheeses, chicken, scrambled eggs, and more. Obviously, if you don’t know how to grill you will be very limited with what you can prepare. In order to grill, all you need to do is turn on the burner, put the item you want to grill into a saucepan, and then flip the item periodically until it is cooked the way you like it.
One more basic cooking skill you need to know is how to bake. Breads, meats, vegetables, potatoes, and many desserts will require baking when you are cooking them. Baking is pretty easy as long as you know how to read directions. All you need to do is preheat the oven for 10-15 minutes to whatever degree the directions tell you to. Then you put the food that needs to be baked into the oven for the amount of time the directions say. Set a timer so you do not forget about the food in the oven and when the timer goes off, check to see if the food is done. If it is not, put it back in the oven for a few more minutes until the cooking is complete.
Understanding these basic aspects of cooking will go a long way for you if you need to prepare meals at home. By comprehending these basic concepts you will be able to begin cooking as soon as you have all the necessary ingredients.

Food For Memories and MealtimeBy admin on November 12, 2009 | No Comments
Food is more than just a source of nutrition and sustenance. A good meal shared by a family can build memories and warm the bellies and hearts of your loved ones. If you think back to all your favorite childhood memories, the chances are good that food was involved.
Remembering Easter brings your mind to all the candy the bunny brought, reminiscing about Thanksgiving with your family certainly floods your mind with turkey and pies and laughter. Christmas, grilling out in the summer, family reunions, birthday parties and more are all celebrated with a yummy meal while you have fun with your loved ones.
Dinners and receptions also mark special moments in time. A wedding ceremony is comparatively short when put side by side to the wedding reception. Every good wedding reception is memorialized with unforgettable cakes, drinks, food and favors.
Wedding cakes become one of the major food groups in the wedding industry. From simple to extremely elaborate designs, these cakes can cost thousands of dollars and take hours of labor to complete.
Weddings are just one example of how cuisine can enhance a milestone to mark it in history.
For most of us, meal time is not made up of four-course dinners with rows of forks for each new course. In fact, many of us are looking for the most convenient meal at lunch time or dinner time.
In addition to something convenient and fast, moms are usually concerned with the diets and health of their family, so mothers will shop for healthier or organic food in place of sweets and junk.
But even the best intentions for feeding your family a nutritious meal can go neglected when jobs, school, social groups and the unexpected happenstances all contend for your attention to dinner time.
The best thing you can do is be prepared. And easy step to take is to make a list of 4 go-to meals that you will have in your house at all times. These meals should be quick, easy and low-cost.
- A few tips for keeping these meals handy and in-stock are to Go Vegetarian – eliminating a meat ingredient in your emergency-meal plan will make it easier for you to have all the ingredients in your pantry. This is true simply because meat expires rather quickly, so having a recipe that calls for pasta and a few frozen veggies is much easier to store in your pantry for a longer term.
- Buy Bulk – if you are going to make spaghetti for dinner, buy twice the amount and hold back half of the ingredients so you will have enough to make another meal later.
- Use Storage Containers – expanding the life of your food will mean it lasts longer and you can keep it around for a while. This is great for cereal, flour, sugar, baking goods and pasta.
Another tip for making meal time quick and easy is to prepare a menu for your week. Make a list of five or six dinners you will cook throughout the week – choose low maintenance meals that can be thrown together in about 45 minutes or less. Then do your grocery shopping and buy all the ingredients for those meals, so you do not have to keep running back to the market.
Here is a short list of meals you may enjoy
- Baked Chicken – find a recipe that calls for you to cover the chicken in bread crumbs or crackers. These are quick and simple – you basically roll the chicken and then bake.
- Spaghetti and Garlic Bread – you can find hundreds of variations and include meatballs or ground beef.
- Sloppy Joes – these are a fun twist on hamburger night and you can play with using beef or turkey and adding your favorite sauce mixture.
- Crock Pot Meals – these take a while to cook in the pot, but once you gather the ingredients, you can walk away and let it cook. They are very simple and the possibilities are endless.

Different Foods and Your LifeBy admin on October 14, 2009 | 2 Comments
Exploring different foods and deciding what you like is important because it makes up part of your identity and will influence decisions you will make for the rest of your life. Of course, what you eat is not relevant to your personality or what kind of person you are on the inside, but every day you will make decisions about what to eat which will affect where you go, what you buy, and the people you will meet.
Deciding which foods you like begins in childhood. Tasting all sorts of different foods and being exposed to a number of meals from different cultures as a young child is important to help you keep an open mind and accept different types of recipes and flavors from the get go. The food that parents feed their children on a regular basis will usually be liked by the child in adulthood because they will usually find the food comforting and familiar. This is why adults and children from specific cultures enjoy eating the foods they were exposed to as children. While an American child might find Asian food unusual and not very good, an Asian child might not enjoy American food in the same way. Therefore, whatever you eat in childhood you will most likely enjoy in adulthood.
As an adult, you begin to step outside the box and try new foods for a number of reasons. First of all, you will begin going to a variety of restaurants for social and business reasons. If you have never been to a certain restaurant and it does not have a dish you are familiar with, then you will have to try something new. Also, for most adults it becomes fun and exciting to try different dishes and foods than for children who are usually opposed to food that is strange and unusual.
Adults also appreciate different foods because their preferences for foods change drastically from childhood to adulthood. Many adults find that they stop preferring extremely sweet food such as candy and ice cream and instead like a variety of dishes that include more vegetables, spices, and cheeses.
Regardless of what types of dishes you enjoy, the food that you like will affect your life in a number of ways. Deciding which restaurant to go to with a group of friends can always be interesting because everyone has different tastes and preferences. The best way to deal with this situation is to compromise and let everyone take a turn picking the restaurant. By exploring new restaurants and styles of foods you might find a dish you like that you would have never considered.
Deciding which foods to buy is another decision you will make regularly every time you go to the store. After you know which dishes you prefer, you will be able to buy the correct ingredients to prepare such a dish. Also, your tastes in food will affect how much you are going to be spending at the store.
Finally and most importantly, the food you eat is going to affect your health. Regardless of what you like, make sure that you are eating healthy foods and dishes so your body can stay healthy. Eating fast food and greasy fatty foods regularly is going to impair your health so you cannot live a fulfilling life.
