Somewhat True Stories Of The One That Got AwayBy admin on December 26, 2009 | No Comments
If you have ever returned from a fishing trip without any fruit from your labor, then you know how tempting it can be to start to tell the tale about the one that got away. Maybe you have been after the Big One in the same fishing hole for the larger part of your lifetime. If that sounds like you, your story may get bigger and wilder every time you tell it. It may end up sounding something like this.
You woke up earlier than dawn so as to get out on the water in time for the best fishing spots. You had prepared your tackle box the night before and placed all your homemade lures neatly in a row. You knew exactly what kind of bait The Big One liked and you knew where he had his breakfast every morning.
A nice line of lures tucked neatly in a row, you placed your tackle box on your trusty old John Boat. The engine purred and you trolled out of the dock just far enough when you jetted down the lake.
This was the lake your father took you fishing on and you knew it better than your own name. There was something about the sparkle of the mist and sunrise that made your lungs open up as you inhaled the day. This day was unlike the others and in your gut, you knew that today was the day you would catch the whale of a fish that had eluded you for years.
He was the largest catfish you had ever seen and from time to time he would jump out of the water and you could swear he looked you square in the eye.
On this fine brisk morning, you did everything right. The lures were tied with the secret knot you learned from your grandfather and no fish could escape your line. As you cast your line into the water, you held your mouth just right. Only moments into your cast, the bobber is towed to the bottom of the lake and you jerk back exactly at the right moment.
You have hooked him, the Big One. After ten minutes of give and take, you can see him just below the surface of the water. You are nearly there, close enough to touch him, but not just yet. You let him float there, in a moment of uncertainty.
What will your life be like without the chase? He has been weaving in and out of your lines for nearly two decades. He was probably the largest fish in the lake. Would fishing ever be the same if he were not lurking somewhere in the deep?
You could not bring yourself to do it. He deserved to be in the lake as much as you loved to tell the stories of how he got away.
In a move that would have made your great granddaddy turn over in his grave, you cut the line.
Immediately, your pole fell from the taunt grip the beast at the other end had put on it. He had disappeared into a messy bed of grass and you knew he would be there every day after that, waiting for you to chase him.
And that may sound something like the greatest story you have ever told, be it a tall tale or something like the truth.

Purposes of Fishing BoatsBy admin on November 29, 2009 | 2 Comments
If you are a serious fisherman, then you have probably been on a fishing boat in your lifetime. There are a number of reasons fishermen use fishing boats but, for the most part, they are used in order to catch fish that cannot be caught from shore or to catch large amount of fish.
A lot of fishermen use fishing boats because they enjoy fishing and being in a boat enhances the experience. There are only so many fish you can catch from shore and for many the feeling of being in a boat and having the ocean or river surrounding you is ideal to sitting on the shore somewhere. Many serious fishermen own their own fishing boats so they can get out on the water and fish whenever they feel like it. When using a fishing boat, fishermen can fish pretty much any way they feel like. They can use a rod, a net, or a fish trap. Using a rod, however, is the most common. Depending on what type of fish a fisherman wants to catch will influence how far out he or she will take their fishing boat. Some fishing boats are small and simple vessels which should not go out very far in a body of water and do not have an engine. A lot of them are powered by man power or by a sail. If you want to go out far in a fishing boat, you will probably want to have an engine to ensure that you can get back to shore.
Although some fishing boats are small and are used for recreational purposes, lots of fishing boats are extremely large and are used for commercial purposes. Fish and other sea creatures make up a huge part of the diet for most of the world, so it is necessary to have fishing boats which can catch huge amounts of fish at one time. These huge vessels are called trawlers and use massive nets in order to catch tons of fish every day. These trawlers catch anything from salmon to shrimp to squid. Pretty much any seafood you can think of these fishing boats are responsible for catching. Most of the time when you go to a restaurant and order seafood, your dish will have been caught by one of these trawlers. Fishermen visit wild fisheries in order to catch these fish and the type of fish they catch will be based upon the region. Fishermen know where to go in order to catch a specific species of fish.
Fishermen are taking a risk every time they go out in fishing boats. If fishermen are fishing for a career, then they must catch fish in order to make money. Therefore, they often have to take their fishing boats out and fish even in terrible weather. This is very dangerous and many fishermen have died on the job. It is not safe to be on a boat when it is raining or storming and the ocean can become very dangerous in these weather conditions. With the death rate for fishermen at a high, there have been precautions set up inside fishing boats such as trackers, radio systems, life rafts, beacons, and others, in order to protect fishermen and keep them alive. Even though fishermen know the dangers of their career, they continue fishing because they love what they do.

Smart Decisions to Make when Owning a Fishing Boat
If you like going fishing, you might want to consider taking out a fishing boat. This way, you can go out farther into the water than if you were fishing from shore and you are more likely to catch different types of fish. There are a lot of benefits to having a fishing boat, but you also need to realize that having a boat requires a lot of responsibility.
First of all, buying a boat is not very cheap. Depending on what type of boat you want to buy, you are most likely going to need a fair amount of money set aside if you want to purchase one. There are numerous types of fishing boats and they range from small simple canoes to large trawlers and fishing vessels. If you want to start a fish catching business and make money off of your fishing boat then you will need to buy a larger boat. However, if you simply enjoy fishing for pleasure then you will probably find that you do not need that large of a fishing boat.
Once you purchase a boat of any kind it is important that you regularly maintain it. Just like any other vehicle, if it has an engine it is important to regularly check the engine as well as the propellers. You will also need to consider what you will do with your fishing boat when the weather turns cold, especially if you are not planning on using it during the winter.
If you do purchase a fishing boat, you always need to be concerned with safety. Any time you take a boat out to sea it is important that you are equipped for any sort of emergency. First of all, make sure that you have plenty of water and snacks for however long you are going to be on your fishing boat. If you find yourself far from shore and you do not have any water to hydrate yourself that can be a dangerous situation. So, always make sure you have a very full refrigerator or cooler with plenty of water and food. Another important thing to remember to bring along on your fishing boat is a lifejacket for everyone in the boat. If you do not have lifejackets for everyone and you do happen to capsize, people could drown and you would probably feel pretty bad about it. It is also important to bring along a first aid kit when you do go out on your fishing boat. Your first aid kit should have plenty of band aids, disinfectant, flares, tape, and pretty much anything else you can think of so you can be prepared for any sort of situation while you are out on your boat.
Never take your fishing boat out alone. You should always have a friend go along with you in case an emergency does present itself. If you were to have a heart attack and no one was there on your fishing boat with you that could turn out very badly. Also, having a friend along with you will make for a much more entertaining time than if you go alone. So, make sure that you always bring along a friend when you go on your fishing boat. If you follow all of these precautions and are smart with your boat then you will be sure to have a safe and fun time.

What to Bring Fly FishingBy admin on October 31, 2009 | No Comments
If you are thinking about going fly fishing for the first time, you will need to do a lot of research on how to fly fish and what you will need to bring and wear. Usually, this sport will take up a good chunk of your day and will require that you bring quite a lot of supplies and gear. Being unprepared while fly fishing can lead to a number of uncomfortable situations for you and can end up ruining your whole day.
One of the first things you will need to consider is how warm or cold the weather is going to be where you will be fly fishing. Typically, you will not know exactly what the temperature will be like outside, so it is usually best to dress in layers. Having way too much clothing is much better than having way too little clothing because you can always strip off layers if you get too hot. If you get too cold however, and don’t have more clothing to layer up in, you will end up being very miserable and will most likely end up going home from fly fishing unsuccessful and upset.
Remember, this activity is something you are most likely doing on your own time for your own enjoyment, so make the most of it by being properly prepared.
No matter what the temperature conditions are, there are a few things you should bring fly fishing that you might normally not think about. Firstly, do not forget water and food. Being out in the sun all day long is definitely going to create dehydration especially if you do not have plenty of water to replenish yourself with. If you forget your water you could end up getting sick and, once again, having your whole fly fishing experience ruined. Bringing a snack for extra energy is also a good idea because you will need to be energized and attentive while fishing, and if you do need to pull in a struggling fish, you are going to want to have all the energy possible to reel it in.
Another important thing to bring along fly fishing is a wide brimmed hat. Being outside all day, regardless of how sunny it may seem, will definitely result in a burned and itchy scalp if you do not have a hat to protect it. Also, a wide brimmed hat will help protect your face from the sun’s rays while fly fishing. However, just because you have a hat on does not mean you should also not have sunscreen. Make sure to lather up in sunscreen before going fly fishing and also to bring the bottle so you can continually reapply throughout the day. Getting burned while fishing is most likely not on the list of things you want to achieve through this experience.
Finally, make sure to have some chapstick or lip balm with you when you are fly fishing. This is something very easy to forget that could make a world of difference how you feel at the end of the day. Oftentimes during fly fishing you will be out in the cold and the wind and chapped lips can definitely result from this combination. So, save yourself some dry and cracked lips by bringing along some lip balm.
These tips on what to bring fly fishing can make a world of difference to you if you do enjoy the sport. Of course, there is so much gear on top of these simple necessities you will need to bring, so try making a list before your fishing experience so you do not forget anything!

Fishing
Fishing is a sport which can appeal to people of all ages from all walks of life. Whether you are a child or an old person, you can engage in this sport and be successful at it as long as you have the proper equipment and are in the right location.
The first thing you need to think about before you go fishing is why you want to fish. Are you looking to do it competitively, to relax, or for fun? After you understand why you want to fish, then you should start thinking about a good location to go fishing.
Before you decide what location you are going to fish in, you need to think about what kind of fish you want to catch. Do you want to catch fish to eat, to display, or to simply throw back? If you want to throw a fish back, then you probably don’t want to catch something huge that is going to take you a lot of time and effort to reel in. But, maybe that will appeal to you.
If you are going to go fishing for sport or for food, then you will do best at a river or on the ocean. Trout and mackerels are examples of fish you could find in the ocean, while you could catch perch or bluegill in a river. It is much more likely that you will catch larger fish in the ocean or on a river. If this sounds like something you want to do, then you might have to travel to go fishing. Oftentimes, people take fishing trips so they can travel to a destination where they will find larger and edible fish than what is in the local pond.
However, maybe you just want to take your kids or friends fishing for fun. If you are a beginner and just want a little taste of what it is like to fish, then a local pond or lake will do just fine. You will probably not catch anything big or worth eating, but it is a relaxing and fun way to spend the day outdoors.
After you have figured out what kind of fishing you want to do and that is right for you, you need to make sure you have the proper equipment to go. There are a whole bunch of different things you should bring with you when you do go fishing. If you want to catch a certain type of fish then you might want to get a specific type of equipment.
Basically, there are quite a few pieces of equipment you will need before you go fishing. These consist of a rod and reel, hooks, weights and sinkers, bobbers and floats, and lures. If you go to a fishing store and tell them exactly where you want to fish and what kind of fish you want to catch, they will help you pick out the best equipment for you.
So, before you go fishing make sure you understand why you want to fish, where you want to fish, and that you have the equipment you need in order to successfully catch the fish you want to catch. If you do all of these things, you will most likely have a very positive and successful fishing experience. So get out there and happy fishing!
