A person is sitting in class trying to pay attention when all of a sudden they notice a strange red dot on the power point slide. The bright red dot instantly distracts the student from the lecture and her eyes begin to follow it as it bounces and slides all over the power point slide. She becomes frustrated because she can no longer concentrate on the slide and she has stopped taken notes. She notices the students around her all taking notice of the strange red dot as well. Soon, nobody is paying attention to the lecture and the professor has noticed the strange red dot as well. He looks furious as he peers out at the students and asks who the idiot is that is using the laser pen.

Nobody answers, but a few people start to snicker as the laser pen lands right on the professor’s shiny bald head. The professor is exasperated and getting angrier with every passing second. He knows that whoever is using the laser pen is using it specifically to distract the students from his lecture, make people laugh, and make the professor angry. Just about as the professor is about to lose his cool because of the laser pen, the red dot disappears. The professor takes a deep breath, calms himself down by counting to ten, and then resumes his lecture. Before he begins his lecture, he gives a short speech on how using a laser pen during a lecture is completely inappropriate and not something that college students should be doing. He tells them that if they want to act like twelve year olds with their laser pens then they can go back to middle school. This incident wasted precious class time for all of the other students and for himself.

The lectures resumes successfully for another ten minutes or so before the laser pen comes on again and the little red dot lands on the professor’s quivering jowl this time. The person with the laser pen is obviously extremely brave and also very stupid because this time, the professor is irate and furious. He stalks up and down the aisle and demands to know who has the laser pen. Nobody comes forward and this makes him even angrier. He declares that if nobody comes forward with the laser pen then everybody is going to be getting a zero for the day. This causes the entire lecture hall to grumble because most of them were not responsible for the laser pen incident. The professor glares out at the entire lecture, everybody stares back at him, but nobody comes forth.

Finally, someone shouts out that they know who is doing it.  A very angry student marches forward and whispers something in the professor’s ear. While doing this, he points up the aisle to an area near where he was seated. The professor smiles and walks up to a student who looks inconspicuous. He holds out his hand to the student and tells him to give up the laser pen. The student denies having it and an argument ensues. Finally, the student reluctantly gives up the laser pen. This particular student is held after class for a very serious talk and is given a zero for the day.

Laser pens are fun to play with but they have an appropriate time and place. If you are smart, you will not bring a laser pen to any lecture because this will only result in consequences and make a lot of people angry.

These handy little tools are also very easily noticed and can be used from anywhere in the room that the speaker is. For example, many professors walk around the room when lecturing but often need to turn everyone’s attention to a specific part of their lecture’s notes. Laser pointers make this very possible because they can be used from a distance and still shine with the same brightness. With a regular hand held pointer, a speaker would need to be right next to their lecture and be able to reach whatever they want to point to. Laser pointers provide much more room and flexibility for the speaker in a larger setting.

Although laser pointers were invented primarily for this purpose, they are used for a variety of other things as well. Mainly, they are popular because children and teens find them entertaining and are amused by them. They often become annoying to many when used inappropriately because many adolescents enjoy taking laser pointers into movie theatres, plays, concerts, or other stage-like situations and shine them on the screen or people on the stage. This activity is very frowned upon and often laser pointers are banned from these situations. If you are caught shining one in a movie theatre, lecture, play, or the like, you will be in trouble for it. Although these instruments are not extremely hazardous to the eyes, they can create blind spots, confusion, and frustration for whoever is being shined at. Using laser pointers in this way is rude and should not be considered by anyone.

Something fun to do with a laser pointer is to shine it for a dog or cat. Most dogs and cats will be very interested in the light that laser pointers emit and will want to chase it around and try to catch it. This is very fun to watch and is very amusing since they never will actually be able to catch it. Also, you can give your pet a lot of exercise by using a laser pointer with it since he or she will just want to chase it around everywhere. Just do not shine the light into your pet’s eyes because that will be just as distracting and uncomfortable for them as it is for a human.

Laser pointers have a lot of great uses and are important tools for specific situations. However, they are often used inappropriately and can be very distracting and annoying in these situations. Make sure that you are being considerate whenever you are using a laser pointer.
