They were probably right because I had a pretty difficult time doing well in French. There were so many rules to learn and remember and I could never remember which verb went where and how to conjugate it. I have heard this is true of other languages as well, including the Spanish language, so I do not know why French would have been so much harder. But, my classmates in French class and I all had a heck of  a time doing well, while we never heard any complaints about learning the Spanish language from everyone else.

When I finally did get a chance to take a trip to France with my family, I was glad that I had decided to learn French instead of the Spanish language.  Unfortunately, when I was finally surrounded by French speaking people I could hardly understand what they were saying. With four years of high school French under my belt, I hoped that I would at least be able to communicate simple messages. I tried and faltered quite a few times and by the end of the trip I will admit I was pretty frustrated with my French speaking abilities.

After going to college I gave up on French, but I wish I would have kept with a language . Recently, my friends and I took a trip to Mexico, and during our short stay I tried to learn a little bit of the Spanish language. We had one friend with us who was fluent in the Spanish language, after years of studying it and immersing herself into different Spanish language cultures. I would watch and listen in awe as she communicated with ease to everyone around us. During this week I was jealous of her fluency in the Spanish language, and I wished that I would have studied

Spanish during high school. I tried learning as much as I could in that short week even though it was not really necessary since almost everyone could easily communicate in English. It is frustrating though to only have one fluent language as my own when the rest of the world, for the most part, has at least two.

Looking back on my life, I wish I would have started studying French or Spanish language as a young child. I think if I would have done this a second language would have come much easier to me. Now, I know if I ever wanted to pick up another language again it would require a lot of time and effort and be a very overwhelming process.
