Careers in dentistry and orthodontics
Dentistry and Orthodontics — By Shopping Blogs on January 18, 2009 9:14 amDentistry and orthodontics is the science and art of prevention, treatment and diagnosis of diseases, disorders and conditions related to the oral health of human beings. If you want to pursue a career in this field, you will be needed to spend some years in a university to complete a professional or academic course and after that, have some years of practical experience under a qualified dentist or orthodontist. Other than being a dentist or an orthodontist, some of the job positions that a person can find in this field include surgical technologists, certified dental assistants, dental hygienists, college dental assistants or medical technicians.
The entire practice of dentistry and orthodontics includes examination, treatment planning, diagnosis, prevention and actual treatment of a dental problem. After entering into this industry, you will be required to use X-rays and other equipment to ensure treatment planning and correct diagnosis. The treatment procedures may include filling the cavities, treatment of gums diseases, removing teeth, removing nerves of the teeth and even replacing the lost teeth with dental plates or dentures and bridges. You may also be needed to use anesthesia as any dental treatment may cause pain. You can use gold, amalgam, cements and silver for filling the teeth and fused porcelain inlays can also used for the purpose. You will be required to suggest your patients to come for a regular dental check up because if a disease is detected in due time, it can be treated appropriately before becoming serious. As a dentist and orthodontist, you will also learn proper methods to brush and floss the teeth and teach your patients how to do so daily. You will also be required to advice your patients regarding what they should and what they should avoid for their good health of teeth.
The degrees of dentistry and orthodontics may differ from state to state and country to country but the curriculum is almost similar. Once you have completed your training, you will be required to achieve a license so that you can practice in the state as a dentist or an orthodontist. These licenses are usually applicable only in a particular state and are strictly non transferable. Dentists and orthodontists may limit their practicing procedures to any single area, including cosmetic dentistry, pediatric dentistry or dental public health.
Over the past few years, the industry of dental health care has been struggling because of a wide gap between demand and supply. A large number of positions have been vacant because of the lack of specialized and qualified individuals. That is why, medical institutions are offering attractive salaries and enticing incentives to individuals who have qualified as a professional dentist or orthodontics. In the present world dominated by glamour and beauty, a large number of people are heading towards dentistry and orthodontics for improving their looks and gain an appealing smile. By becoming a dentist or an orthodontist, you will help many people to improve their confidence and self esteem by providing them with a brighter and whiter smile which they had always dreamt. This industry is a booming one and you can be a part of the bandwagon by pursuing a course in this field. You will easily be able to find a job for yourself and you will be content with the feeling that you are actually helping people to improve their lives.
