Architecture of a place gives recognition and inimitability to a place. The styles of architecture differentiate not only in terms of regions but also differ with eras, techniques of construction and materials used. In order to understand architecture better let us have a look at some of the given overviews of architectural styles which would brief all the possible domains of architecture.

Modern Architecture: The modern form of architecture has similar architectural styles throughout. The simplicity of style and almost no ornamentation forms the distinct characteristic of modern architecture. It became the inspiration for numerous architects in the 20th century. It became immensely popular in the era of World War Two. The style was in for almost three decades gifting the globe with beautiful structure in the form of corporate buildings and institutions.

Late Modernism: After the era of modern architecture prevailed the times of Late Modernism, also known as High Tech Architecture. It was in the full swing by the 1970s. Its example can be very well seen in the schools, hospitals and churches of that era.

Postmodern Architecture: The Postmodern form of architecture can be classified as the international pattern of architectural designs. Although the beginning of Postmodern Architecture was observed from the 1950s but at that time this pattern was not too dominant. Of late, the world is brimming with some of its classic examples which include SOM’s Lever House, Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram building, Michael Graves’ Portland Building, Las Vegas Strip, etc.   

East Asian and South Asian Architecture: This form of architecture has its roots connected with its history and religion. One of the distinctive features of East Asian architecture was the tombs or the circular shaped structures in the buildings. South Asian architecture evolved itself taking inspiration from the global influences over a period of time. The time honored guidelines of Vastu Shastra still exists in the architectural style of South Asia in the modern era.

Moorish Architecture: The Moorish form of architecture particularly defines the Islamic architecture belonging to the North African region and some areas of Spain and Portugal which were governed by the Moors during 711-1492. Few examples of Moorish architecture which still exist are the Alhambra palace (1338-1390), La Mezquita in Codoba, the ruined palace city of Medina Azahara and the Giralda in 1184.

Gothic Architecture: This is a unique style in the architecture which developed from the Romanesque architecture and in the course of time influenced and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. The Gothic style of architecture originated in France and existed from the 12th to 16th century due to which it was also known as ‘the French style’ of architecture. Some of popular churches, cathedrals and abbeys of Europe are examples of Gothic architecture. The distinctive features in this form of architecture include the ribbed vault, pointed arches and the flying buttress. Many of these religious buildings which still exist have become a priceless works of art and are listed with UNESCO and are considered as World Heritage Sites.

Mentioned above are few of the prominent architectural styles which dominated the world in the past centuries. Each of the architectural age has its own importance and significance. There were other forms of architecture which were influential around the globe. Some of the most popular ones were the classical and neoclassical styles.
